I was going to put a water feature..but not anymore. I want to buy a Labrador puppy..so he will need all the room to roam around :) Hope the little bugger doesn't destroy the new garden and plants!!!!

It depends on what look you are wanting to achieve. Personally, I like Australian natives as they only require a trim from time to time and don't need any other maintenance. They don't need much water (plants in the bush survive just on rain water) and the roots can rot if over-watered. They don't need fertilising. Most native plants grow very quickly and fill in the space in no time. Shrubs which grow no taller than 2-3 metres, grasses and ground covers are my favourites. Beware of planting tall trees, as over time the roots can uplift concrete paths, driveways and house foundations. Also, raised garden beds against the house foundations can lead to termite invasion.

Labrador puppy and new garden! Good luck there. Put in some trees which he won't be able to destroy. You can go for flowering ones such as plum, cherry, peach, and apricot, though they can get quite large. There are magnolias, camellias, grevilleas, banksia and in hot sunny dry spots oleanders. For shrubs, there are the evergreen gorgeous gardenias which make lovely waist high hedges, and daphne for a spot with morning sun, once again making a nice evergreen filler, and clivia for deep shade such as south facing walls. Roses are very hardy and might survive a puppy attack. They have a reputation for being high maintenance and thirsty but that is a myth as they do best with care but will do well with total neglect, just go to any abandoned farm house or cemetery!

Wow, a lovely home. Pittosporum and Silver briches work well together. They will give you privacy but still have a soft look. Underplant with small Hebe or lavenders, or small growing native grevillea and bottle brush. Fill in some of the spaces with some annual seedlings. Don't forget herbs are also a good way to fill spaces. Learn to live with a gappy look for a while because the plants will grow.

Ps, keep the dog out, it will get very expensive replacing ripped out plants.

The reason we planted them spread apart like this is because the plants we planted will eventually grow to 1.5 metres in width, so instead of buying them already at their full size, we thought we'd start off small and let them eventually grow...but once they are fully grown it will look more fuller :)

Ps - Might be getting that Jap maple, but we're gonna wait a while and see

Plants look awesome Italian Girl, loving the black boy tree, one of my favorites. Love the edition of the owls too. Grass looks awesome , just make sure to water it lots every morning and night. Plants look very slick and modern. good choice with those, you cant go wrong with cordylines they always look great especially in modern homes. Who did your landscaping? and are they pricey?

I was at a nursery on Friday arvo and saw grass trees (known as Black Boys, but apparently you cant call them that anymore) starting at $200 all the way up to $20,000. Made me think of this post.

Your plants look great and once they grow more it will look a lot nicer, but its good you started small and So glad you went with charchoal stones and not white ood choice. Still waiting on photos of your backyard and pool/

Already have LesleyH and I am happy to say that they have already now finished and I'm over the moon with their work. They are honestly the best Landscapers i've come across and have done such an amazing job. I even get stopped by random people coming by complementing the garden on a daily basis wanting the Lansdcapers number. Very very happy :))

I bought a 4 year old house recently with about 9 grass trees. Some were really tall, like 2-4 metres. 4 of them have died and 2 more are dying. Nothing we do seems to help....

Oh no :( I was told not to water them a lot...maybe once every 2 weeks, not even
