What is the big black item hanging behind the shutter and drums? Do any windows face the street so that you'd need to keep window treatments consistent?

So if the sectional would seat the entire audience! ;-)

FLOR tiles [where there's floor space]... even under the drums... in the hallway too.

Esp. if your floor has a tinge of red, this tangerine could be nice. Add bohemian-type throw... or mix of tangerine and off-white. Those tiles can be picked up and rinsed.

Right now it looks as if there are lots of hard surfaces in the room, which would make for lots of echos when mom beats those drums. How about some textured wall hangings to help absorb the sound? A colorful throw over the sectional and a rug that can resist spills, as well as add pattern.

There's a brighter blue - would this complement your drum set with its silvery metal? - and urban art - ?

I guess I didn't notice the walls are light blue - is it bad? If you used a subtle navy rug, might be fine - above is Heron Blue rug.

I would consider removing the huge ottoman if you feel the sectional feels too large. However, if it is for kids then it will probably be something that is used often. It is hard to give decorating advice given that all of the kids will be using it and you want it to be comfy.

I would add a rug, something with color would help ground the space and make the space feel cozy. Also a couple of throw blankets would look nice and get plenty of use. I think throw pillows would not be a terrible idea given that some ppl would like to lay down and have one for his/her head. You could even put a large basket nearby the sofa to hold them when necessary.

A cool large framed poster of something everyone loves (a sports team or band or whatever) would look great on the wall in the empty space to the right of the sofa and left of the window on that wall.

If you do not need the cedar chest, I would remove it for more space and open feel.

Do you like the wall color? Usually light blues bother me but I think it looks nice. If not, then are you looking for something warmer and cozier? If so, then a nice warm khaki color would look nice. You might want something brighter?

What a fun space, and so much "wow" potential! At the very least I would suggest paint, rug, artwork, and throw pillows. The sectional, from what I can see in the photos, looks perfect for a hang-out TV room--a great size for a bunch of teenagers to sprawl around and not too big at all for the space. Choose a paint color or colors you love (my first thought is a rich navy blue, or grey with an orange accent wall), and a graphic patterned rug (cb2 has some great options). Then decorate the walls with art of a similar theme in simple, matching frames: if Mom is a drummer, what about vintage music posters? If you're really feeling edgy, a cool wallpaper could really amp up the space. Most of all, have fun!

My thoughts: Black ceiling with string LED lights, gray shutters, camel wall color, bright rug, and music-themed artwork.

Could the drums go in other corner where the buffet piece is? Also, pull the ottoman away from the sectional to make it less overwhelming. Maybe even replace it with a coffee table or different ottoman.

Nice space for the kids! What is in the corner where you stood to take the photo? Can the sectional be moved toward that corner so it is centered more with the TV? It seems a little hard to watch from the corner. If you need the chest can you move it to the other side of the sectional under the corner window to serve as an end table? I think Dr. Nancy's mockup is very cool.

Boys, girls or a mix?

Easy to move the sectional around. We don't need the chest and no one likes it.. except it once belonged to Grandma and hubs doesn't want to part with it.

I like a clean, minimalist look so would love to get rid of the chest. The big blank piece behind the drums is a built in chalkboard.

Any suggestions for window treatments? Happy to keep the current ones although they do block quite a bit of light.

I think the pale blue would be soothing and a break from much brown.
