help! which light? need a solution to a high problem

I have posted before asking which pendant light for our stairwell and now the builder tells us there is no noggin and will be expensive to remove roof sheeting or ceiling to put one in. There is electrical in the ceiling for a central down light but I don't want to put a central down light because it would be a nightmare to change. Any other solutions that would suit this? I don't know what else is achievable electrically.

Comments (12)How tall are your ceilings? They look way too low for a ceiling rose! Those chandelier things are a bit off, aren;t they?? If the house is actually modern, I think it would be better in the long run to get rid of that ceiling rose all together. It is hard to tell from the photos, but am assuming that the other lights are over the kitchen and dining area? With the ceiling fan added to the equation, you would definitely be better off replacing with LED downlights. Get a professional lighting person from Beacon in to show you the best positioning so that you get it right first time. A couple of options on the links you posted would work with your style (ie. plain round glass or a simple white dome), but be careful with options using those decorative "Edison" style filament globes, they only emit 25watts, so not bright enough for task lighting. Comments (14)Its funny talking about pendants when its near an airconditioning outlet because that airflow will move the light and give a really wild effect moving in the breeze. Comments (10)Annb1997. Thanks for your suggestions. I don't think I need a heated towel rack if have a central heating radiator. A hanging rack would go above this perhaps too but also near the shower. In my lomg experience of CH the towels dry off fine in winter this way. In summer also when radiator not on if the window is open. I really do not like sliding doors on showers so have to find a solution with a 1000mm square shower with door. I have spent two hours today in a showroom looking at all possible combinations. Clearance is insufficient with certain size fixtures as you state with the vanity in the new position. Comments (20)I would not touch your fence for at least 12 months. At the moment it is giving you a quiet and private garden "room" which leads off your charming front verandah. Why don't you see how much you use this outside space during the different seasons before you make a decision? At the moment I would be comfortable enough to sit on your front verandah in my PJ's and dressing gown having a morning wake up coffee and enjoying the morning sun. I would never do that if the neighbourhood could see me. Never rush into making any changes to a new home until you understand the home and how it performs through the different seasons. 8 years agoWe do have step lights in the plan. My husband thinks these won't provide enough light. How about something like this installed in the wall at the corners of the stairwell opening?
8 years agoIf you’re having step lights perhaps you could also have uplights, pointing up not down as in this example, on the handrail.
- 8 years agoThere would have to be some timber as there would be ceiling joists. I think it’s a matter of getting the builder to see where they are and then fitting a light cable to one of these, even if not centered, letting the cable swag to the where you want to fix the pendant. Hope this makes sense. I’ve posted a pic for you. Not sure if this helps. Has the electrical wiring been completed?

8 years agoSconces would work well. I would suggest full glass lights rather than lamps that direct light up or down. There are a few new, larger wall mounted lights that you could attach to the full height wall (which we can’t see in the photos). By placing a mirror or collection of framed mirrors and glass covered pictures below the light you can bounce light back into the stairwell.
