Kitchen Bay Window

Hey All. Another decorating question.. You guys always give great advice. We have this great bay window in our kitchen. Over the years I have tried to decorate the window sill the best I can but always seems to fall flat. It gets the morning to mid morning sun so have tried the herbs but they don't seem to get enough sun. In winter the glass gets really cold as we get sub zero temperatures. I thought about a small fish tank (could only be small as we rely on rain water for decent water). It has got a blind already on it, which very rarely comes down so there's a lot of window there! Any ideas???

Dreamer's idea of removing the blind is a good one, I think

Adding succulents is also good, too

Then maybe you could install glass shelving across the window

and fill the space with more succulents - all in complimentary pots,

so it looks like a specialist's collection

Hi,
What a lovely outlook, succulents would grow well, they are so popular at the moment, there are lots that would be happy on your window sill, choose some fab pots and plants they could look great or even a trio of terrarium ‘s could look beautiful if you go fish tank, choose fish that enjoy changing conditions, temperatures etc.

Go and see what size a standard bay window is from the window supply shop you're thinking of using. Or Google trendset, Stegbar etc. It's cheaper and easier to use standard sizes if you can. And that way you can get a idea of sizes.

a custom made window short enough to allow space for a built in seat should be able to be made to replace the original living room window within a frame added to the outside of the building (check "bump out" and "modern box windows" HOUZZ photos) but, following on from previous concerns, the stairs will need to be rebuilt and will depend on the distance available both along the front wall and out from the present position..see attached rough draft...you'll also need to check with local council to ensure that your proposal is legal (you may need to make a Development application because there'll be a change to the outside wall and the "streetscape") and then discuss with a builder to clarify possibilities and prices

Remove the broken venetians first. Add greenery in colourful pots. Paint the architrave to freshen up. If window gets cold, then install blinds on outside of window to keep cold out. Close up each night in cold weather.

They were quite fashionable in the 1980s and I think from memory, they did come with glass shelves

I would remove the venetian and use the space for a coloured glass bottle display. The changing patterns of light light coming through the coloured glass will be different at different times of the day.

Many succulents require good light levels, and a coloured glass display can look great with even low levels.

Look for Murano glass which has gorgeous colours when daylight shines throigh it.

Me me-It came with a steel shelf which I removed to open up the window a little bit, but a glass one is good idea.

Dreamer - The Venetian isn’t actually broken it’s just the way I have pulled it up. What colour do suggest for the architrave?

Hi Gamon, my colour suggestion would be a fresh crisp white. It maybe that already, but the photo on my computer looks cream. I would still remove the venetians, whether broken or not.

I would also remove the Venetian and concentrate on the outside garden so you have an unimpeded view of the garden. If you need a window covering a plain blind that disappears would look best, IMO. Best of luck.

94236633 - Yep think I might get a new blind for it . We do need something there to block out the cold, also when we go away to pull down so you can't see in. Not sure what you mean but the concrete- if your referring to the retaining wall - that needs to stay as its holding the Garden in place. It's a sloping block. Won't have a garden without it, just a pile of dirt!

Put a blind on the outside of window. Automatic, remote control one would be best. This would then stop the window from getting cold. If you put a blind inside the window it defeats the purpose. The cold has already got in.

Wouldn't it require multiple blinds on the outside since it's a bay window? Perhaps replacing the venetian with honeycomb blinds would go further to insulate the house during winter?
