Help with kitchen and laundry layouts
This is further to my post requesting help with bathroom layouts.
Our house is 30 years old and in original condition. I would really appreciate some advice on the best layout for our kitchen. At the moment it has very little storage and we have 2 kitchen dressers to help with this. It is quite a good size but we believe the layout could be so much better. We have thought of having an island bench but it would have to run in the other direction to the current bench and we are unsure if this would look right. But we think this would be the best way to allow more cabinets for storage.
We are thinking of having a walk in pantry in area adjoining the laundry. However not sure of best way to do this. Where should the door go?
We had thought at one stage of opening up the family room to the rumpus room but this would mean losing a large built in cabinet on this wall which is vital for storage. Any ideas on other options? If we did open this up we would like doors on it so it could be closed off.

Any comments or ideas at all would be much appreciated.

Hi oklouise. Thank you for your reply. I have updated and attached the plan with the measurements you requested. The depth of the shelves in each of the cupboards is 450mm.
I have also attached photos of the current pantry and the built in wall unit that divides the family room and rumpus.

Comments (4)also for safety having a back door is essential in case of fire etc. Make sure the door is an exterior grade one to keep "night visitors" out. I've seen laundries housed in cabinets...the firsts suggestion sounds nice but i haven't seen your floor plan layout. is that double laundry sink your bathroom vanity as well? maybe get the washer hardware happening inside (and preferably an under bench model for more bench space and an integrated look), and choose a farmhouse design sink. choose all white and grey tones. best of luck....See MoreHelp with laundry/bathroom layout
Comments (22)Hi. This is the existing plan. Entrance is currently at front up four stairs (house on stumps). Or via back door on ground level that goes into current ground floor laundry. From laundry you walk up four steps into current dining. We are a family of five. Kids are now 8,6,4 - two youngest are in long side bedroom (has angled roofline), master bedroom is front middle room and oldest child is in bedroom that joins existing dining room. Kitchen is in the middle of the house (there’s a window to laundry from kitchen which would originally have been to outside before laundry enclosed and built in). We want to add another bedroom, deck and larger kitchen to cater for growing family but we are very limited with budget and need to do so smartly. House has high ceilings and VJ walls internally but fibro outside. Bathroom has been recently renovated. What we love about the house is that it is open and airy. Comments (3)having the bathroom next to a bedroom suggests an extra door to create a full guest "suite" which also makes the house more appealing for two singles sharing while still providing an everyday toilet accessed through the laundry...there should be no need to move the windows or toilet position although the central wall has been replaced with a stud wall with cavity sliding door off set to screen the toilet from view through the open laundry door..the bathroom includes a generous 1500 x 900 shower or shower over small tub and a 1000 wide vanity (for guest towels, linen, toilet rolls etc) and (subject to accurate window size and shape) superimposing a decorative mirror or blinds in front of the window adds privacy ...the laundry has space for a stacked washer and dryer, single drop in tub over Lshaped cabinet (about 1700 x 1100) with open space under the corner for a tall laundry basket and cat litter nook below open shelf or drawers (for laundry and cat supplies) ...there's room for two separate tall storage cabinets for vacuum and/or narrow open voids for broom and freestanding ironing board etc and the plan shows a position for either a fold down or freestanding ironing board with dotted lines showing wall cabinets or open shelves overhead hanging racks above the sink and ironing board for hanging clothes for drip drying and before and after ironing...See MoreKitchen + laundry layout dilemma
Comments (19)Hello Alex, Lots to consider here but the first thing that comes to my mind is that a four bedroom home needs larger than a Euro laundry: too many people too many dead socks and best to not mix them with the soup: unhygienic for a start! So to that end IMO the laundry parallel by the stairs two straight runs of benching one with the machine and trough the other side for folding, drying and storage. A loo in there if you need it but if you have access to the main bathroom one you would not really need another to clean here too. Then the pantry can be a continuation of two straight runs of benching on the kitchen One dropping to banquet seating for dining table at the end closest to the garden. You can fit a lot of little bottoms along bench seating and makes the area neater with storage under as well. If possible without breaking the bank you could, as someone else suggested have cut outs through to the living room from the kitchen and dining for connection. It is the dining that you want connected to the garden not so much the kitchen, tho the view would not be compromised, and the laundry would have doors from its place by the stairs. (What is upstairs: more bedrooms!?) I hope this makes sense for you. my suggested island bench would be from 750 to 900 mm deep and up to 2100 long mostly drawers with overhang on one side for stools and/or shallow storage... the space between the island and sink and stove is 1100mm and the walkway between the island and the new pantry 1250mm... location of the sink depends on how you like to work...sink and dw at the left (still has a view out the window and access for others to help with the dishes and space along the window between sink and stove for preparation and island is free for serving, unpacking groceries or quick meals and the stove out of the way at the end .. the storage wall in the family room could be made out of freestanding modules to create a small desk near the window and combination of ta;; short and wall storage to suit what you need to store and similar freestanding units (tall shallow bookshelves with glass doors?) could be useful for dinnerware, glasses, table linen and serving ware in the dining room
