The visual artist needs the window - so position easel? or other working items where the keyboards currently are . . . and start working from there. The blue sofa cushions - maybe hang them against the walls (they could function as pinboards?) - but I think you need something to deaden the sound - or your neighbours may hate you. Rugs on the floor and the thickest drapes you can afford (or improvise with blankets) for the window. Hmmm . . . maybe artist towards the right-handside (door-side) of the window - trestles in L shape along the long wall, and a bit of the window to make 2 desks - and musician's stuff occupying the wall adjacent to the door and into the centre of the room? Everyone gets a shelf each in the cupboard . . . and a dedicated space in the room?

I appreciate that you have used furniture that you like/have, is comfortable and within budget - you have created 2 separate functional areas in such a small space. Well done. I would try not to be offended by other comments because, if your brave enough to post photos and ask advice - you should be brave enough to take those comments with a pinch of salt... nothing in it. My honest opinion is... working with what you already have I would be inclined to bring the armchair forward a smidgen and squeeze a really tall artificial or real plant behind it. (Whatever your lighting allows for) Move the desk hard up against the right wall and position the lamp in the right corner (not middle of desk). I like the photo wall however would be concerned that 'seeing the frames' on both sides would make the room look smaller so I wouldn't position mirror on left side. Mirrors are great for that feeling of more space but not if the reflection is too busy in such a small space? I agree that you need height and in particular on that end wall. I think accentuating the end wall would be more beneficial space creating wise, than a mirror? Maybe even consider painting the desk / chair wall in a warm or cool colour depending on your taste! I think a small round jute rug would fit nicely sitting just under the foot stool? Have fun with it ...

Simon, 100% agree with OKlouise, she's on the right track..... I've done a stack of these types of things.....big projects, that call for professional solutions....what I would say as a start is that there are always various ways of achieving your needs. It's not just about the rooms, it about the quality of the spaces, the proportioning their connection/relationship to both the adjacent internal and external areas.....I'm guessing from the floor plan you have a lovely older home with some traditional character...depending upon your needs for the rear yard (pool??) I see opportunities here for alternative configurations that would open this thing up and let more natural/north light into the main living/kitchen areas.....if you want my 2 cents I think for a home of this scale no you shouldn't have to pop through the kitchen to get to the study...a study nook within a kitchen is OK but as a differentiated room that could potentially be used for other purpose (always good for the property value factor ;) )....its ALL in the planning, there's a lot of money involved here so make sure you get it right and if it doesn't "feel" right, then there's an issue.....clearly here you have priorities and vision for your study, and that's great, so make sure you get it right and that the outlook is how you want it to be - so it should, it's yours!.....but it's not a simple as just swapping the spaces around/over...floor plans are delicately balanced and carefully considered/arranged and when resolved properly/professionally they will just sit there and be unquestionably "right", appropriately scaled & proportioned, not awkward, representative of your specific requirements/priorities and balanced within the particular context....

if you post the whole floor plan we could see adjoining rooms and all the doors and windows and do you intend to use the whole dining and lounge for the study with small sofa, piano and Ikea shelf?..do you need a desk and/or other furniture ..what will you use the rooms for and will it need to be shared with other people and purposes eg will it be a separate study/work space from the rest of the house or will you still need to include a dining table, lounges and TV etc
