Ventilation for a skillion shed

I have a skillion roofed shed that gets hot in summer and condensation under the roof in winter.

Weathertex board for walls and colourbond roof, north-south orientation in Sydney, high side of roof on western side, low wall on eastern side. 6.6m long x 1.5m wide (yes long and skinny shed). Shed also divided into two sections, one part with the pool equipment and other side with all the usual shed stuff. Dividing wall does not reach the roof totally, about 10cm from the top.

I had three thoughts to fix the heat and condensation:

1. Foilboard placed on top of the rafter, leaving about 15mm air gap between foil board and roof

2. 15-20mm holes along the length and top of the 6m walls under the batten board. (insect screens to cover the holes to keep creepy crawlies out)

3. wind whirlybird

Any advice on which method would work, or other ideas greatly appreciated.

Why can’t you use insulation and line it with James Hardie fibre cement sheeting. I have a pool house with a skillion roof and that is what we did no problem with condensation at all. We used James Hardie Scyon sheets for the walls inside and out and have a vapour permeable membrane as well as insulation.

That sounds good Cheryl. I was hoping to avoid having to line the whole shed but I may have to so the temperature is more even inside. I'll check out the sheeting and membrane. Cheers

Well, it's Abscos skillion roof carport that's very strong, more than the gable one last time I checked. Gable roof carports can also cut out sunlight to house windows, while skillion leaves some light at top . You'd still need a shed for storage. Garages are obviously more secure for the car. Re a large shed/garage, you can get extra windows and skylights in many, also roll insulation and cyclone bracket kits. Some have extra height, if you have a boat, or are tall. you pay extra for colorbond. If its visible from the street, or from entertaining rooms, that's worth it. They have regular sales. one person needs a helper at certain stages. A mate of ours dislocated his shoulder while carrying a large sheet of steel, for a large commercial shed, when a gust of wind caught it. solar garage lights are available in hardware stores, you'd need a few for a garage, or wire the shed to house. Hardware stores also have storage systems for common shed/garage items, to click and store on the metal walls. I'd be going back to the architect/designer and asking why the vent wasn't on the plans then armed with that info, I'd be asking your Turkey of a Supervisor why if it wasn't on the plans he didn't flag and insist on being given the EXACT code that he's referencing (including the details so that you can review yourself) as last time you checked YOU WERE THE CLIENT - It's a shame you've had this happen - your home looks as though it will be stunning, but others have said it wont be so noticeable when the building is done completely. The placement kind of makes sense since heat rises so you'd want it to be as close to the highest point for maximum effectiveness but you should have been aware. Check on the builders itemized estimate to make sure that you didn't miss it by accident so that if you did accidentally miss that one line item on a list of a million you able to prepare your argument accordingly.

The shed is ours on our property. We were planning to build a house but money is becoming an issue as the start date is drawn out (out of our control). We are considering living in the shed temporarily so we can sell the house we live in currently and use funds to prop up our ailing house budget. The budget for the shed house is basically as cheap as possible. But needs to be comfortable because not sure how long we'll need it. We will be insulating, etc but not sure how to organise cross flow ventilation. Very reluctant to have an air conditioner

I'm a male -- I was going to say it has to tie in IMO . But then I remembered . I'm a car nut , and I did buy a house ( and lived in it for 8 years ) that had was 150sq mtrs in white weatherboard with french doors , a concrete terrace right across the front , dark green iron roof , white picket fence , large section -- you get the idea . It even had conifers and a couple of standard roses when I bought it ! Out the back was a 450 sq mtr workshop ( including a pit ) that was unpainted concrete block , a faded red roller door ( probably 4 mtrs x 4 mtrs ! ) and a red iron roof ! It wasn't until I was wanting to sell that I painted the roller door and roof in that 'roof' green , and the side door and window frames in white ! These days my workshop is a commercial building , and my garage matches my house .

Is it easy to remove the roofing and replace it again? If you are prepared to do that I would recommend using Anticon insulation under the roofing.

It is a foil faced fibreglass blanket (foil down) that you place tightly over the battens before you replace the roofing. This will stop the condensation and make it more bearable in summer. You can get it in various thicknesses but most typically R1.3 to R2 (60-90mm). It needs to sit tightly to the underside of the roofing to prevent condensation. It gets squashed over the battens, but that doesn't matter so much.

When building from scratch it would be better to place it under the battens for more consistent insulation thickness. I always use this under metal roofing, even when there will be ceiling insulation as well.
