Natural passive airflow, cross ventilation, working in this heatwave?

I am very interested in the principles of passive air flow, natural cooling and cross ventilation. I just wondered if any of you who have built these into the design of your homes, are managing in the current heat wave that the east coast is experiencing, or are you resorting to using the air con too?

We live in Brisbane in a post war, in a gully and the current temperatures and humidity are pretty high. I don't like to use the air con, but its getting pretty unbearable.

We have deeper eaves on the northern side where our kitchen, dining and living areas are, Tall bamboo to block the western sun to half the house. Insulation in the roof and most external walls. I guess I am interested in whether its worth investigating other changes we can make to our house to improve its cooling abilities or if its the same for everyone in this kind of weather.

Thanks Mel
