Lipstick on a pig

We just bought a lake house in need of some work and are repainting the inside. I want to paint the kitchen cabinets Hague Blue and the walls (kitchen and all main family living areas) Shoji White. I am obsessed with Shoji White for some reason. It is an open concept house with an asymmetrical slanted high ceiling in the main living area. Do I use Shoji White for the ceiling and trim work as well? There is no crown molding around the ceiling but there are some ceiling beams I plan to paint as well. If not what color do you recommend?

Yes, photos please. Your title is indicating you got a really ugly house or a really broken one, and you are trying to fix that with some paint. So telling us what is broken or you are finding ugly would be helpful too.

Hi everyone, thank you all so much for your comments- each one has been really helpful & thank you to those who have complimented the work. I still fluctuate with whether I love it or not, but as jdublya says, i think its just a mid reno freak out! My original colour choice was a dark brown, but unfortunately following other suggestions, it ended up being black. Anywho I will continue to push through with all the other plans- light grey walls, white door frames and doors, and black handles. Then have a think about wall art - frames etc. Once all of that is done i will post an update and let you know if we decide to change anything with the stairs. Also thought I'd mention that the colour of the flooring on the first level has come out a lot more red than it actually appears in real life. I am quite excited to finish the project but of course with limited funds, 3 kids, 2 dogs and a kitten it takes a lot of time! Sit tight, will update as and when :) Thanks again all, your encouragement is encouraging ;-)

I own commercial property , and I'm trying to work out what you are wanting to achieve ? You say you want to join all 3 . Is that by adding more floors , more walls , more roofs , more windows ? Or get a crane and excavators and move them closer together ? Do you have a potential tenant or even idea of the type of tenant you want ? What are they looking for ? Most tenants , no matter what size , want a workshop/warehouse area , and offices . These don't seem to have offices , toilets , etc . So instead of spending $100k moving or closing in , and then finding no-one wants that size , or doesn't want that size without 100sq mtr of modern looking office too , have you done some research ? You may ( or may not ) find that having 3 entrances ( yes , it may need 2 or 3 posts in the fenceline , and another gate , and some more mesh ) and 3 offices , you can get 3 tenants who will pay more than 1 larger tenant , and/or one can close or move -- that is easier to re-lease than a more specific larger premises . Conversely , the market may want your 'new' size' , but do they want that style , that age , that location ? Building offices may work out being not much more than closing everything in ? You hopefully have asked all those questions , but your query was a bit vague . Then , and only then , would I even consider paint colours , I'd keep it real neutral BUT I'd actually only do the one end facing the busiest street ( as bigreader says , most companies want some corporate branding ) and me being me , I'd paint the flashing just on the part facing the street in bright orange or fire engine red or vivid green -- literally $50 worth of paint , just to get it noticed and stand out , knowing it is likely to be scraped off or repainted , but to make the building noticable for the right reason , and make the new tenant/s think .

Depends a little bit on the style of your house , but my first reaction is the same as bigreader -- no , and almost certainly no , no , no , no , not 4 rooms in one house . Some of the schists look alright , the 80's style might suit an 80's or even 50's minimalist American house . There are some fairly cool 'wavy' panels that are available these days ; even some feature walls that look like timber ends sticking out of a wall ; wallpaper works in some places ; but one wall of brighter paint is the most obvious 'feature wall' . Faux Stone , or that ship-lap timber , or diagonal timber are about as exciting as yellowy beige or mission brown .

Hi Anthony, the floor tiles look good and black and white is timeless so go wth that - get the wall tiles and floor tiles in the shower sprayed white and paint the vanity cupboards and window frame black, this will transform the bathroom and is the least cost option. Black, white and green looks great so add some forest green colour towels and some indoor plants in pots on top of the shower wall. If the budget will stretch remove the shower curtain and install a hinged glass screen and put a big silver framed mirror above the vanity (if you dont already have one, sorry I cant see if there is any mirror there or not).

This photos are older but all I have at the moment - the countertops are solid surface white and stainless steel appliances. The den picture is accurate.

The cabinets and continuity of color among the rooms - they go from white to tan throughout.

Slab style cabinets, IMO, are very boring & often cheap looking when painted. The variation of a wood grain gives the doors some interest. (One exception is high gloss laminate cabinet doors--a high end Euro look.)

I would add some pulls to those cabinets and leave them otherwise unchanged.

The backsplash? Cabinets and counters are neutral--splash is one place you can use the blue or just about any other color you desire. Greens, aquas would work nicely with the wood.

Then yes, painting all the walls white would deal with the continuity, and if you don't like the current cabinet color then blue would probably be nice. Make sure you use samples first. That it works with the new counters and also the flooring and you like the white paint in the different spaces.

I'd do everything the same white - shoji white if you have extensively tested it in different areas in all of the rooms at different times of day. Don't do different white colors on the trim.

I concur with ci_lantro that the cabinets painted blue will look cheaper, but maybe you are ok with the more causal DIY looking vibe at a lake house. I'd look online extensively to find some slab front repainted blue cabinets to get an idea of what you are looking for. Forget any blue cabinet pics with shaker fronts.

I agree with you about the cabinets- but I really do not like them at all; and don’t have the budget to replace them. I’m hoping some simple moulding added on top and brushed gold pulls will help. Do you think the blue will make it cheap looking or just the flat front in general is a lost cause?

It sounds like you prefer a cottage look. The slab front cabinets are modern. I don't think painting them and applying molding is going to help too much. They look old - normally I would suggest replacing the doors so you can get closer to the style you like, but I don't know that they're worth it. Be careful about putting molding on top of them. Because they're a simple style you can't put standard molding on them.

I love Shoji White too, but I would use Pure White for the trim and ceiling because Shoji White is an off white, not white. Then the next time you want to repaint you have a versatile trim color that you won't have to repaint. Shoji White will look good with those cabinets if you decide not to paint them. Maybe do all the walls first and see how you feel about the cabinets. Make sure Shoji White looks good with the countertop before proceeding. If the countertop is a white-white Shoji White may look yellow next to it. Since the picture doesn't show the countertops I don't know how it's going to look.
