I love your scale drawing. I would go for the bigger table. But you can also mark out the table on your floor with masking tape and see what you think of the circulation space.

Thanks bigreader, it’s a bit difficult because the house isn’t yet built. Apart from table size I’m also worried that table and floor colour tones don’t compliment each other … as the floor is greyish in Karndean washed butternut. I’ve looked high and low for a table and this is the closest I can find to compliment other furnishings. Maybe the best thing to do is move in and get a feel for the house however I’ll be without a table for three or more months. The floorboard sample is in the photo next to the table and I’d welcome thoughts on whether it would work or not.

I’d go without a table rather than make a bad decision. It’s hard to tell from pics on a screen and from using these small samples. My initial reaction is that the table would be OK with the floors but I don’t love the chairs. Wood floors, sideboard, table and chairs is a lot of wood. Getting wood tones to work together is difficult. Do you have a mood board or a collection of inspiration pics that you’re using to help with decisions? The rooms need to be considered as a whole taking into account your kitchen colours, art and soft furnishings.

I would go with the larger table, and as suggested, don’t purchase anything until you are in the home.

It’s hard to wait because I’m itching to go! But it would be a terrible mistake if wrong. I should focus on creating a proper mood board instead of having bits and pieces everywhere. I’ll YouTube & check Houzz here for ideas. Thanks 🙏

Congratulations on your new home, it’s so hard waiting, as suggested by bigreader a mood board is a great idea, your table choice is lovely but think of alternative options also, sometimes we can have too much timber and one piece more can be overwhelming, good luck, love to see what you decide on.

Congrats on your new place, wishing you many years of happy home making. I’m also in the ‘wait’ group, but I’d add that if you’re going to have a floor rug in your dining area, choose that first. I think it could impact your choice quite dramatically. If you decide on timber, I’d also check marketplace for individuals who make furniture as a sideline. You may have the option of choosing a finish that blends or complements your floor/sidetable and they are often very reasonably priced. Also the chance to find a good second hand option in the style of the side table. Good luck

I have the option of buying this and having it restored. It’s a Parker table the same as my parents had, the cost of restoring and thought that I need to make a more modern choice is holding me back. Also that I might find it difficult to match chairs. Of everything I’ve had to make decisions about, the table seems the most difficult. The concept of rug first is interesting. Thank you Jan

Love the table. Grab it. It and the sideboard will be your personality pieces. Essential for a new build. Let go of the matching chairs idea, it’s likely a contrast would look best anyway. And worse case scenario you can on sell the Parker table.
