Art is such a personal thing, check Norsu, Urban Road, Mesonart, Kimmy Hogan, or local artists. Just choose something that you love.

4 looks like something I've seen on The Block. The problem with that is it starts to be everywhere. There was a picture on the block a few years which now shows up regularly on real estate listings, especially in buzhy houses, not sure how that's spelled. The funniest one was where the same picture was hung on two walls in the same room. Not a matching set, not a diptych, just the same print on two perpendicular walls. Talk about keeping up with the Joneses. Everyone has one of those Block pictures, so they had to have two.
I agree it's a great opportunity to support local artists. Maybe there are art and craft markets in your local area, or art shows where the works are for sale. Just check the dimensions that work best for the space, and enjoy looking.

macyjean, they are beautiful aren’t they, the 4th one is by an Australian artist Kimmy Hogan, her work is beautiful, she is now branching out into ceramics I believe, it’s true, you need to find a piece that brings happiness to you whenever you look at it. We are so spoiled for choice with some gorgeous artwork from many talented artists, and a huge range of prints available to frame.

If you can afford to, definitely buy from an artist rather than getting a print from a big box store. It makes such a difference, both to artist and your home. Cheap art is actually very recognisable and will quickly undo the impression of your other quality interior choices.

The space looks to be your front entry, so the piece you get will instantly tell a story about who you are and your tastes in the first few seconds a guest comes to your home. Think especially about how you'd like to feel every time you and your family (or visitors) come through the door. Do you want the first impression to be that your home is a kids zone or a bachelor pad? Or stylish and refined? Playful? Humorous? Have you travelled or come from another part of the world - if so, something that ties into that might be a good idea (but no eiffel tower posters! ;)

I always think it's helpful for beginner collectors to start with the size of the wall space bc that's not negotiable. It looks like you get good light there so can take a range of light to dark tones. Do you like abstract art or realistic likeness? Will a still life with jug light you up daily?

You never need to match your art to your soft furnishings - you can if you want, but the colours should be something that you like, colours that feel good. Perhaps something a bit shorter in height than the mirror opposite?

The best way to choose art is to find something that makes you FEEL an emotion. There's a lot of good and bad art out there, but the most visible/tv marketed/mass produced art is not usually the best.

One of the things I love most about art is how it can subtly impart something about who you are, without the need for you to explain it. In the same way someone who dresses stylishly appears instantly confident, without the need to follow the latest fad.
