I wonder whether a courtyard style garden would suit the site? Of course if you have children then you will probably need some grass. You need a patio in the sunny area and make sure you leave borders all around for planting. On the sunny fence I think planting Roses, Clematis and Star Jasmine will green it up nicely. You can underplant with sun loving Lavender, Cistus and hardy Geraniums. You could also plant shade loving climbers up the garage side walls, my favourite is climbing Hydrangea. I can see a few slabs outside the house so you could extend that patio out as on very hot days it’s nice to have a bit of shade. These are a few ideas
