Like above post, add a small addition that encompasses the front door and a window.
consider adding interest by installing trim work like the Craftsman style support beams.
Remove the siding and replace with hardiboard siding. Add interest under the windows. Lose the old shutters and maybe even windows upstairs and replace with longer windows. At least some nice big wooden shutters. Remove shutters below completely. Trim out the windows.
