For staircase leading to upstairs, we were thinking of this but leave off the bottom horizontal piece (just to make less busy, but open to changing if you think needed). Would have posts that look like post to left but with double treatment at top.
For balcony railing we were thinking of posts like to left but with double treatment on top and then glass railing (no top rail although not sure of code) and oil rubbed bronze attachment of glass to post. It feels so much open without any railing today which made us think glass would be good.

question/concern: is the railing design with traditional craftsman moldings (windows/doors) that we are thinking of going with, our big built-in bookcase/fireplace, existing kitchen cabinet style all going to be too many styles?

The ONLY element to look at is the post on the stair. Like the simplicity of it with the flat top. This would be used inside for both balcony and stair railing. Maybe even outside. We were thinking perhaps there should be 2 rows of the narrow treatment at top. thoughts?
