Before & After: A Kitchen That Anchors a Vast Open-Plan Area
Floor-to-ceiling windows flood this north-facing kitchen with light, shadows and reflections
In a Q&A format, we talk to the builder behind one of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
The 1990s kitchen before works
Brief
The home was originally built in 1996 and the client was looking to create a contemporary, relaxed and inviting feel. It was a great canvas to work with due to vast open-plan living spaces exaggerated by the high ceilings that flow out to an alfresco area and infinity pool.

Starting point
- The floor-to-ceiling windows (opposite the kitchen) allowed an abundance of natural light with a sunny, northern aspect, and breathtaking views to expansive bushland, so the entire project worked around this.
- Plenty of natural light through the use of an open-plan design.
- A large island bench.
- Wide entrances.
Key design aspects
Colour palette:
Colour palette:
- The dominant colour is crisp white with timber accents in the chairs, stools and handrails.
- The taupe window furnishings tie in with the stone benchtop and space above the range hood.
- Black fittings.
The kitchen before works
- There are pops of bright colour introduced through decor and artwork.
- Shape, shadows and lines have been carefully considered to direct light deliberately through the space, bringing a lightness and brightness to the colour palette.
