Current trends have seen the wine cellar evolve into being one of the most celebrated spaces in the home. While it is chiefly designed to showcase a prized collection of wine, it can also be an inviting place to relax and even entertain friends while enjoying a glass of your favourite drop.
Fusing modern design with wine cellar technology has allowed for the traditional wine cellar to be incorporated almost anywhere in the home, regardless of the available space or aspect. Take a tour through these incredible cellars that provide the ultimate settings in which to enjoy and celebrate wine within the home, and you may even gain some inspiration for your own space.

1. Clearly front and centre
It’s not unusual to see state-of-the-art, glass-encased, temperature-controlled wine rooms being introduced in the main living areas of homes. Beautifully designed with feature display areas illuminated, and with ambient lighting to justly feature extensive wine collections.
Thanks to their design they may be appreciated and admired from all angles – while also being conveniently close at hand. The double-glazed entrance into the exquisite wine cellar pictured here is positioned over a water feature of glass stepping stones, paving the way to the ultimate wine experience.

2. Dining display case
Designed to blend seamlessly into the dining area, this stunning glass ‘display case’ of a wine room is definite a showstopper. Glass isn’t a great insulator, so the inclusion of double insulated glazing is important. Natural light will degrade the quality and drinkability of the wine over time so UV protection is also a must.
Vertical timber joinery divisions separate a vertically designed rack system for the wine bottles to be stored high to the ceiling, creating a grand effect. Highlighting with both directional and ambient lighting to draw attention to the display ultimately impacts and transforms the entire dining experience.

3. A place to taste
By incorporating a tasting area in the wine cellar, you can transform it from being a mere storeroom into a space for special experiences. After all, there is no point in taking that vintage bottle all the way upstairs to dinner only to find that it’s corked. This sophisticated, symmetrically designed cellar has been detailed to precision with the tasting experience in mind.

4. The club lounge
If you’ve got the space, why not expand the tasting-area idea and bring a club lounge look into the wine cellar? The club lounge provides an invitingly rich, warm and refined interior with the addition of comfortable chairs (often in leather), which are complemented by dark timber and metal furniture pieces. As you can see in the space pictured here, the cellar becomes an enticing place of escape, to relax and enjoy quiet time or to open and share one of your collection’s best drops.
Custom-designed joinery can display the very best bottles, glassware and decanters while providing maximum storage for the collection. By sectioning off the storage racks behind a wall of glass, you can also ensure that the two separate areas can be temperature-controlled to suit your needs.

5. Wine wonderland
The design of this wine cellar has been taken to a whole new level with the creation of a spectacular wine wonderland. Rather than incorporating conventional wooden racks throughout, acrylic and glass cavity walls have been introduced into the heart of this expansive cellar to showcase the bottles individually. The entire space is brilliantly illuminated with LED lighting, which has been designed to change colour depending on the occasion and desired mood.

Too spectacular to be hidden away in the basement, the cellar pictured above has also been designed to be appreciated and admired from above through a glass floor in an upstairs sitting room. This allows the wine cellar experience to be enjoyed in another room for a truly memorable occasion.
6. An underwater affair
This underground cellar features an unencumbered view into a swimming pool through a glass wall. Unexpected and unique, this is undoubtedly a place where all who visit the home are taken to check out this cool room at least once, whether it be from the ground floor stairwell or while taking a dip.

7. Underground vault
Quiet, private and insulated, a basement cellar can create the ideal atmosphere and setting in which to inspect a wine collection, and later share a bottle or two with friends. The temperature is naturally at its coolest and most even at basement level. Plus, with the addition of a long, centrally positioned table with timber bench seating, a large vaulted cellar such as the one pictured here invites the opportunity for larger gatherings to enjoy the space and indulge in an extended wine tasting. Just add a complementary cheese platter with all the trimmings for a sumptuous evening in.

8. Illuminating design
This wine cellar is a dazzler. The black backdrop sets a dramatic scene in which to feature an electrifying display of LED-illuminated glass shelving in the round. The final effect showcases and highlights every bottle, ensuring each is easily identifiable – mesmerising!

9. The vintage advantage
Everything that goes into creating and cellaring a fine bottle of wine centres around timing, precision and perfection. Applying these rules to the design of a cellar can complement the collection and the overall experience of the room. The design seen here has been beautifully detailed with an enchanting entrance and quality joinery, finishes and fixtures, and comes complete with an intimate tasting table and chairs for two.

10. The sound of music
Good wine and classic music are two of life’s greatest pleasures. You can ensure they complement each other perfectly if you convert a space that has enough room for a small piano – or perhaps even a harp – plus plenty of wall area for built-in cabinetry. You could even make a music den multi-purpose with the addition of a wine cellar wall, making the room an ideal location in which to savour and enjoy both wine and song.

11. Simple is stunning
This glass-walled wine room allows for a visually open space in which to display an extensive collection of wine, which has been placed in simple pigeonhole-style timber shelving. The timber dining table, panelled ceiling and wooden cellar posts, and of course the shelving, unify the overall look of both the dining area and cellar, while also promoting the understated simplicity of the home’s interior design throughout.

Wine can slot in almost anywhere and there are a variety of ways to showcase and store wine in small spaces. You can show off your best bottles mounted on a wall-mounted racking system should you have a spare wall, special bottles can be aged in a small wine fridge, they can easily slot into a bookshelf or be set onto a small modular rack that you can build on as your collection grows inside a cupboard or wardrobe... In behind the kickboard of your kitchen cabinetry is another area that is often under utilised storage-wise, and to include kickboard drawers will allow you to access you wine with ease. The location is important to consider depending on how soon you plan to drink particular wines re: light and temperature... cheers!
“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.” Ernest Hemingway.
I couldn't agree more with Mr. Hemingway!
Such an inspirational and beautifully written article @LewishamInteriors. Please keep them coming! #Ineedawinecellarinmylife #lifegoals
Hear, hear, Nena! To surround yourself with the ideal space that has been specially designed to appeal to all the senses (suitable to the individual) has the potential to transform the wine experience above and beyond. Oh, and beautiful, appropriate glassware is a must!
