Kitchen of the Week: Smart, Elegant Atlanta Addition
Controlling traffic flow and conquering clutter topped the priorities list for this 1980s-era Georgia kitchen
This clean and elegant Atlanta kitchen was originally a big '80s-style mess. The original kitchen was poorly laid out, had the standard '80s finishing and was riddled with poor construction. The homeowner wanted not only to update the kitchen's style but to create a space that would allow for cooking and entertaining without disrupting traffic flow.
By adding a small addition to one side of the kitchen and reframing a portion of the space, Renewal Design-Build created enough room for extra living space, storage and cooking.

Small organizational details make a big difference. The handy shelf behind the range, for example, frees up valuable inches of counter space.

This soft green-blue cabinet is where Renewal Design-Build placed the coffee and tea station for the family. A small nook built into the cabinetry keeps it out of the way from the kitchen's main prep and cooking areas.
The homeowner's art, furniture and china helped determine this soft shade of green, which keeps the kitchen's otherwise gray palette from feeling too cold.

Tucked away at the end of the countertop, simple built-in wine storage keeps favorite bottles of wine on hand with glasses stored right above.

The homeowner wanted the kitchen to have clearer access to the outdoors, so Renewal Design-Build added two new entries and exits. The team made sure that the doorways were separated from the main part of the kitchen to control traffic flow. A drop-off station for keys and other odds and ends keeps items from filtering into the kitchen.

Initially, there were structural details with the soffits and ceiling height changes from the original addition that the team had to deal with. But by adding molding in different depths, they were able to create a beautiful focal point.
A ceiling bump-out for the sofa and a few feet of floor area for the dining table made a huge difference in the space's functionality.
"You don't always have to do big additions to get a great kitchen," says Heather Shuster, project development director at Renewal Design-Build. "Focused zones and smart storage can make a beautiful and functional space." The team only added a little square footage here (less than 12 square feet), but it made a huge difference in the layout and flow.

Once the kitchen had been brought up to code, Renewal Design-Build created a number of floor plans for the homeowner to consider, all of which allowed for casual dining, plenty of storage and a clear entry and exit to the yard. This particular layout has several activity zones designed to control traffic flow in the kitchen.
