1. Look to urban ‘hoods for inspiration
Not sure where to start? For inspiration and ideas, look no further than iconic, urban neighbourhoods such as New York’s Nolita and London’s Camden where fashions are born and style never stops evolving.
Next step, choose the right colours and materials. “Seemingly unfinished elements, such as exposed brick or ductwork, paired with metal, wood and concrete-style surfaces really help to create an industrial-style aesthetic,” says interior designer Nina Magon, a member of the Cosentino Design Alliance.
Add depth and interest by introducing bare lightbulbs, low-hung pendants, worn leather upholstery and one or two vintage pieces, such as an armchair or side table with a story to tell.

2. Seek out luxurious & hardwearing surfaces
Quality surfaces are always a worthwhile investment, particularly when it comes to the ones you use every day, such as kitchen benchtops and bathroom countertops. Not only will they create a more luxurious look, but they’ll be tough enough to withstand wear and tear – an essential ingredient in a family home.
Concrete makes for a great feature material in an urban-industrial scheme, but it can be tricky to install and care for. Instead, seek out new-generation concrete-look surfaces that give you the rugged, earthy look and feel of the real thing with none of the installation or maintenance hassles.
The Silestone Loft collection features five stunning concrete-effect finishes with all the texture, shading and nuance of real concrete, inspired by five industrial-style neighbourhoods across the globe.
The surfaces are scratch- and stain- resistant, and come in extra-large slabs so you can achieve expansive surfaces without joints for a seamless look.

3. Choose timeless colours
Classic neutrals sit comfortably alongside industrial finishes such as brick and concrete, and provide a solid foundation for the New York loft aesthetic. “White, grey and dark colours, such as black, are great options,” says Magon. “They pair well with a variety of other colours and look great in many different applications.”
A simple, neutral base won’t date, plus it allows you to have fun with accessories – think brightly coloured light fittings, bold, contemporary artworks and playful, patterned scatter cushions, all of which can be swapped in or out without a huge outlay if you want to update the look down the track.

4. Create a sense of flow
While there’s no rule saying all the rooms in your home need to match, by creating visual continuity between the different spaces, you’ll give your home a unified feel. A sense of connection is particularly important in an open-plan space where you have a direct view from one zone into another.
Using one or two common elements in different ways and quantities is a great way to go about it, creating that all-important cohesion while giving individual spaces their own unique personality. “I’ve used the same surfaces for accent walls, flooring, countertops and backsplashes in kitchens, and also have featured it in a number of furniture pieces,” says Magon.
The key is to look for versatile materials that come in different thicknesses that can be used for multiple applications throughout your home. Silestone Loft is available in 1.2cm, 2cm and 3cm thicknesses, and can be used in endless creative ways in your kitchen, bathrooms, bedroom and living spaces, including benchtops, wall coverings, floors and vanities.
Other ways to boost visual continuity include selecting paint and upholstery colours from the one palette and choosing similar furniture styles throughout your home.
