Sorting Out the Sparkle: How to Declutter Your Jewellery Box
Organise your jewellery so the next time you need the perfect piece for your outfit, you can find it in a jiffy
I’m a necklace girl. I love having a collection of necklaces that I can quickly and easily see, select and wear, finding the perfect accessory no matter what outfit I have on. Do you love wearing jewellery too? Do you dream of being able to display and access everything simply and easily? If so, it may be time for you to declutter and reorganise your jewellery collection. Here’s how.
My suggestion is to gather it all on your bed (make your bed first) so you can see it all ready for the next step.

Jewellery categories
When you’re organising your jewellery, it’s useful to sort it by category: rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches, for example. This is helpful so that you can assess how many pieces of each type of jewellery you have. You may think you only have three bracelets, but once you look at them all together you might be surprised to discover you have a dozen.

Sub categories
Once you have all your necklaces together, if you have a lot, separate them into silver, gold and costume, for instance, so you can see what you have in each sub category. I was surprised when I did this a while ago to discover that even though I didn’t wear gold I had quite a collection of gold necklaces.

Any items that are broken can go straight in the bin or the kids’ costume basket. Lots of people keep broken pieces with the intention of having them fixed, but rarely do we make time in our busy schedules to follow up on this intention.
Also be realistic about items that don’t fit anymore; bracelets and rings that no longer fit can be donated.

Honesty time
Once you’ve finished your first sweep, it’s time for a deeper declutter. With the pieces you have left, pick up each item and hold it in your hand and ask yourself if you both love it and wear it. Do you feel beautiful in it? Do you have outfits that match this piece?

Keep only the pieces which you love and donate the rest. You’ll end up curating a beautiful jewellery collection that is not only decluttered, but out of which you can quickly and easily find what you want to wear.
If you’ve kept silver or gold to melt down, decide if you’ll actually follow through or whether it’s time to let it go. Give yourself a timeline to how long you’ll hold onto silver or gold to melt down before you decide to donate it.
There are so many beautiful storage options that you can purchase readymade, or you can get your creativity on and build something bespoke.
Necklaces are best stored by hanging them individually. As seen in this photo, you could double your available wall storage space by storing them behind a hinged mirror.
Bracelets look beautiful when stored in antique saucers or stacked on vase necks.

Do you know where all your jewellery is? We often keep jewellery in many different places (jewellery box, bathroom, bedside table, jewellery tree) so gathering it all together can give you a good idea of what you actually have. And don’t be too surprised when you discover jewellery you made in 1990, or necklaces with half a heart that you shared with your primary school BFF.
