A Three Acre Rock Quarry: Landscape between a rock and a hard place

Traditional Garden, Los Angeles

This beautiful orchard was created out of a ancient rock quarry. When we first visited the property to meet with the client, we discovered that there was no soil on the property. The acreage consisted of DG, rock and packed clay. The client, an avid gardener, wanted to created a lush and productive orchard and vegetable garden. The area chosen was in a flat area between two downward slopes and protected from harsh canyon winds by large ancient California Oaks at the entrance to the space. A small strip of lawn was added to soften the harsh space, thus adding green to the barren area and contribute to the lushness without over taxing water requirements. The slopes were planted with California natives and drought resistant plants which would provide seasonal color as well as hold the slopes from erosion. Orchard trees include Pear, Peach, Apple, Figs, Blood Oranges, Lemons, Tangerines and limes. Another small orchard area in a protected area provides Cherries and Apricots. A series of raised vegetable beds are enclosed in a iron fenced area receiving full sun and protected from the local deer and animals which would otherwise decimate the harvest. Large boulders have been placed throughout the garden and property allowing for seating and viewing the gardens and country side from different perspectives. Viewing benches and tables carved into the landscape provide unique entertaining spaces. Photo: Xavier Perez-Grobet
