Colorful Cottage Kitchen

Traditional Kitchen, Chicago

The intense color of this room can throw you from its cottage-kitchen scent, but a close inspection reveals cottage kitchen materials and design elements. The island uses off-white cabinets – a traditional cottage kitchen color – with a cocoa glaze to create an aged look. The island is topped with a laminate countertop that resembles maple butcher block. Against the walls, darker colors ground the space: slate-look laminate counters top maple cabinets with a cinnamon stain and onyx glaze. Beadboard paneling, another cottage design staple, is typically seen on cabinet doors and wainscoting – but in this kitchen, it’s applied to the ceiling. The vivid colors in this kitchen come from the walls and furniture. Various shades of green dominate: the crisp, spring-time wall paint, the deeper green tile in the backsplash, and a leaf green on the barstool seat. The rest of the backsplash uses blue and yellow tile that complement both the array of greens and also the lemon yellow paint in the mudroom. The mudroom and walk-in pantry provide storage while allowing the main kitchen area to feel cozier. Open shelving, school-house pendant lights, and wide plank hickory flooring all add to the cottage charm. Copyright Kitchens.com
