Helios House, Refurbishment

Bathroom, London

Staircases are often the main feature of a home. At Coffey / Homes we enjoy the moments where you change from one level to another and at this Duplex apartment in London the stair really sings. The whole home responds to light and shadow and the stair balustrade becomes a filter for light, casting shadows onto the marble and terrazzo flooring behind. The combination of light, shadow and material can be so beautiful if considered carefully, it can make a home feel luxurious. Add to this the playfulness of a gentle curve and the resulting rooms feel free flowing and present. Subtle curves to the apartment walls and corresponding radial brass trims inset in the terrazzo floor relate to the centre of the TVC Helios. Brass perforated screens filter sunlight, creating active shadows that enliven the home. A nod to Helios, the god of the sun, and our passion for light the home located in Television Centre in west London refers to the drum form of the existing building. By simply curving the internal walls concentrically the light cast by the screens bend and curve across high quality materials meticulously detailed. The rooms become a movie of light as the sun passes across the sky.
