Notice the shallower cabinets, against the wall, to the left of the fridge. A small desk area is a perfect drop off zone for bags and for charging phones, or perhaps a fruit bowl. The adjacent 3 doors are for pantry items. The cabinets were stepped back in order to create more space around the island to allow for seating. Being shallow but wide, still provides ample storage for pantry goods, and in fact makes for very easy access to items. Nothing gets to hide away too easily!
