Small urban garden

Contemporary Garden, London

The owner of this small, triangular-shaped garden in Chiswick, west London, wanted a modern outdoor room that would link seamlessly from a newly-built contemporary orangery. Water, lighting and low-maintenance planting were also required, as was the need to integrate an existing summerhouse that dominated the space. Existing fencing was to be disguised to blend in with the overall style. The garden measured 11m x 6m, narrowing to just 4m at the rear corner. As no lawn was required, this was completely removed in favour of a smooth sandstone paving that was used to create the sense of a larger space and complement the interior flooring. A main focal point in the garden was a slate-clad water wall. Lighting was used to extend the garden’s use into the evening, while painted trellis panels and climbing plants were used to disguise the existing utility fence panels.
