About Us

Carste Studio wants to make obtaining approvals and realising development of your traditional or heritage property as tpainfree and rewarding as possible. We specialise in providing a comprehensive range of services relating to heritage planning and assessment and design, conservation and contextually sensitive projects. Conservation and adaptive reuse is the cutting edge of sustainability. The core of our practice. The studio is led by Stephen Booker, Conservation Architect and Heritage Consultant, and has a highly skilled team behind him that allows for Carste Studio to deliver effective, relevant and comprehensive solutions for homeowners looking to renovate or complete a new build. Our in-depth technical experience and understanding of governance, documentation and modelling over an array of diverse and comprehensive projects, enables us to deliver our clients sustainable, cost effective and environmentally sound solutions. Stephen is also a partner in Newcastle wine shop "the discerning drop" an eclectic boutique wine shop selling premium wines and craft beer. Expect a complimentary bottle of wine after completed projects.

Steven Booker of Carste STUDIO has provided Heritage Impact Statements for a number of our projects in recent years, with the most recent being 1-11 Alison Rd Wyong. Steven's in-depth knowledge of local heritage and conservation criteria is excellent and the content of his reports have been precise and detailed covering his assessment of the building. His subsequent recommendations have been appropriate (satisfying both Council's requirements and our own), whilst allowing enhancement of the building and we have been able to achieve these recommendations within our budget. Steven has always been available to attend site inspections on request and subsequent reports have been provided within the requested timeframe.

If you want a heritage architect, Stephen Potter is your man. He has many years of experience in preserving historic buildings and goes out of his way to be helpful and available. He also has useful links with appropriate tradespeople whom clients may need to undertake the specialised restoration that is required. He is well versed in the grant application process and we hope to use him again in the future. His fees are more reasonable than someone we tried before.

The Consultant is very professional in this specialised architectural field. The project was addressed in a thorough and detailed manner within the agreed timeframe The fees were very competitive.

I have worked collaboratively with Stephen on a number of projects where we have combined our heritage skills to prepare management plans, review DCPs and carry out Heritage Impact Statements. Stephen has provided sound and practical architectural advice for heritage listed buildings, and assisted with some of my archaeological projects with conservation and heritage management strategies. I very much respect Stephen's experience in the industry and his sensible approach the competing issues of heritage management and adaptive re-use and/or conservation of heritage items.

Stephen Booker of Caste STUDIO taught me in a blink, that I was not an architect. To simply see the possibilities in a scene that I had been staring at for two years and blend the renovation of two houses different houses is not happenstance it is reality. The projects were 20 years apart ( 1990s $120,000.00 renovation and 2014 planned $200-250, 000.00 intended but not completed within Caste STUDIOs ), Being renovation plans, each set their own challenges. But attention to detail, regular site visits and documentation in precise, concise prose, brought my family through within in costs in the first renovation. I had no hesitation in recommending Stephen Booker Carste STUDIO one of my siblings recently...

I am delighted to commend Carste Studios to you. Carste Studios is retained by the Anglican Parish of East Maitland as our heritage consultants. We work closely with the principal of Carste Studios on a regular basis to fulfil the requirements of heritage oversight on multiple projects on our historic site. The principal is also engaged in overseeing the development of plans and project management for complex heritage matters relating to our buildings. Work includes: ongoing review of heritage buildings, design and implementation of WHS and access solutions on the site, and design and management of restoration projects.
