From a career in providing design for residential works I am able to produce a Sketch Design that addresses important ‘Fundamentals’ for a house (see below). The design intent is passed onto a Draftsperson, to provide Approval & Construction / Contract Documentation for tender by Building Contractors. Good Design with efficiency of planning, energy and cost, and good relationships to internal and external spaces, can be life transformative. CONSIDERATIONS The design of living accommodation to suit particular person’s or family’s requirements should take various considerations into account. These may include: The FUNDAMENTALS: Orientation & Glazing, Shading, Thermal Mass, Insulation and Efficient Planning If appropriately addressed, these fundamental aspects create a comfortable and efficient environment in which to dwell. Additional ‘Design Generators’ and considerations may include: •Specific requirements and desires of the people involved •Site, location characteristics, landscape and outdoor spaces •Budget & Financial considerations •Efficient Planning, Structure and ‘Build-ability’ •Indoor / Outdoor relationship •Day-lighting & ventilation •Views from and to the house •Construction and materials •The aesthetics or appearance of the residence •Environmental considerations such as energy usage and water management •The type of construction and who is going to build the house •Design for surprise and delight. Extensive experience in residential design and construction, and a passion for houses has given Geoff a large vocabulary of design options, an understanding of the 'consequentials' of design decisions, and the skills to present and improve a design to suit specific needs of people and their site.
