Any ideas for this rather squat stingy looking 60’s brick veneer with minus street appeal. Luckily the interior and back of house is much better but the front & entry is awful. I like Mid century so that’s not contributing to my dislike- I guess every particular period just has ugly houses. Should I bag the brick? Paint the brick? I attach a pic of the rear of the house as a matter of contrast! Any suggestions appreciated.

The bricks are the best feature. Everything else is where the improvements can be made. Landscaping verandah paving windows gutters

If you look at this article, there is a similar style house painted white with orange features and a Palm Springs vibe. I think it looks great and a bit of fun! Then if you do a Google image search of that picture, you get a whole lot of similar styles that might inspire you.

It is always a challenge working with a house that has been subject to lots of renovations over the past, some of which may not have been given enough design consideration. At the moment you have a bit of a mish-mash of colours and materials that are working against each other. Without knowing your budget I would consider two approaches to improve the look of your home cost-effectively: 1) Simplify the palette of materials and colours. At the moment it looks like you have face brickwork, render, weatherboard, fibro sheet with contrasting battens and a steel roof. By replacing the fibro sheet with a weatherboard to match the lower half, then painting all of the walls a consistant colour will make the house seem a bit more together, and less busy. With such a busy mix of materials you don't need any contrast or features standing out - so a monochomatic approach is best. 2) You have a huge amount of grey concrete which is great for cars, but isn't adding anything to the look of the house. Reduce the concrete area by at least 50%, especially if it is hard up against the house, and replace with mulched garden beds and planting that is appropriate for your location to soften the look. Have to agree with Oklouise, keep side entry as is but define with new paving within carport leading up to the front door.,Add clear roofing next to house leading to entry, large pots and good directional lighting for night time to draw you to the front door. I would remove the large plant on the left of the carport to open up the entrance. Mark walkway to front door with paving, paint or render the bedroom wall at the end of the carport add a light and large pot of succulents which are easy care and will love the light coming through the new roof Paint and update the exterior of the carport Opening roof by Stratco Outback, or Vergola Pergola to let light in over entrance way

Hi Caz Your house has a lot of character. To freshen it up I would look at painting it white. Resene Triple Black White. It's a beautiful soft white but not creamy. The red guttering, which you decided not to touch, I would paint a grey with a green edge. Perhaps look at Resene Half Gravel or Resene Tapa. What I'm trying to do is find a dark colour that blends with your existing roof colour. For all the beautiful fillagree work, (what appears to currently be painted a shade of yellow) and poles, use a paler neutral with a green undertone like Resene Ash/Half Ash. If you want to accentuate the details on the poles or those corner pieces, you can double the strength that is used on the poles i.e. If you used Resene Ash, use Resene Double Ash. Have a play around and decide what colour intensity you like for all the details but don't go too dark, just so you can see a contrast. I think having the beautiful red tiles on the porch is fine and you don't necessarily need to keep the red on the guttering as it is drawing the eye to look at it. That scheme will freshen the house up beautifully. No pictures of front door but a glossy dark grey colour, similar to the colour in the porch tiles will tie it together. It will look beautiful. Would love to see more pictures.

That idea from Suneiah is great, dark rails , dark front door to match, dark planters at front door, at side of house maybe ornamental pears with star jasmine underplanted, a bench to admire the view, outdoor lighting and plant up hardy plants under your tree to create a green welcoming outlook, this one is Festucia Gautieri very hardy.

don't change the bricks, paint or replace the shutters and screen door and invest in some generous landscaping to improve the look of an already great looking house

The home definitely gives the mid century vibe. So embrace that. I suggest adding breeze blocks to the front of the carport where the support posts are. Add colourful planting, more pots at front windows. I’ve changed the painting trim to white and the blinds as well. Or you could keep the same colours. Paint the breeze blocks white. Also change the front door screen, remove the grill screen and install a mesh screen, same with the window screens on the left of the picture.

I'd change the shutters, not just paint them. Are they for shade, privacy of both? Agree with changing the grid screens to Amplimesh, Crimsafe or similar. Landscaping as dreamer has, but maybe with a long planter box across the part of the house where the shutters are. Pressure wash the carport floor and maybe the driveway. I think it will look great.
