Function always comes first at my house. I have old dogs (11 and 14) and need a covering on the stairs for their safety, as well as for the safety of the upper-middle aged humans in the house.
Of course, everyone's correct here. If you need to cover the stairs, for either function (in your case) or just preference, try to do the least amount of harm to the wood so that it might be resuscitated at a later date.
