The trees are Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Atropurpureum'. They are a form of weeping Japanese maple. In this photo it's Springtime and the new foliage emerges as this lovely rich reddy purple. As the summer progresses the foliage changes to a deep green and then in Autumn the tree is ablaze with red, purple and orange leaves. In Winter the intricate lacework of the branches is also very beautiful. I have attached a late Autumn photo.
The size will vary on the type of maple and the height of the original graft. Plants are grafted onto rootstock of various heights. These particular ones are over 20 years old and when purchased were only 50-60 cms high, the rootstock being about two thirds of that height. They are now a metre tall. The original rootstock can be short like these were or 1.5 -1.8 metres tall in which case you can expect a fully grown plants up to 3.0 metres or so with an equal width. I am currently working on a project where there is a magnificent weeping japanese maple of those dimensions. See photo ......at end of verandah.
