This isnt something we left behind but was left behind in my wife's grandmother's garage and when we discovered it it was very happy surprise. So I think it's a good idea to leave a momento from your era.

My Mum would always leave a coin from that year in the wall cavity of any house she renovated or built.

We have moved 21 times, some of which were to different countries. And we have always left something behind for the new owner.....a bottle of wine in the wine cellar, some paper towels in the laundry, instant coffee.....I'm sure you get the picture. Too many to remember all, but the idea was something they could use right away.

i think this is a fabulous idea...having renovated several homes it's been very exciting to come across some old history like the 1912 rate notice we found in one house and the old floor safe, under carpet that, once opened revealed a dirty old tea towel!! The possibility of finding something interesting helps brighten the drudgery of all that hard work and we plan to leave some history with instructions and some ugly garden sculptures when we move next time

I left a kitchen rubbish bin - but that was completely accidental. Rang the agent and asked him to apologise to the new owners . . .

Hubbie did some grano work in the garden and left our name and date. Always felt embarrassed about that!!

I can remember when my parents sold the house we grew up in. they accidently left an old suitcase in the area above the manhole. Would have been a great suitcase to have kept, it was one of those cardboard type and would have been 50 years old this year. It came with us from England. I think it was empty but who knows.......

We will be moving in a couple of years after about thirty years here. I would like to leave something for the new owners but have not had any scathingly brilliant quirky ideas. the saddest thing we will be leaving is a managerie of buried pets. Mind you they all had a magnificent time while they were here.

In the wall of my renovation 13 years ago I put in a sealed tupperware container (sealed with wax) In it I placed a box of Matchbox cars (all the rescue vehicles) a boxed Barbie Doll, receipts for both, that days newspaper from our little town, a lock of hair, a half bottle of port ( sealed with wax) a five dollar note, some coins and a letter to my future time traveler. I put in a list of all the contents (that could be read through the bottom) with a wish for the box not to be opened until 2102. I often wonder if it will ever be found.

I've moved house many times and generally leave something - usually I include some instructions eg for the airconditioning or heating units or for the sprinkler system. Also mostly a bottle of bubbly to welcome them to their new house. But my mum did the best, she lived in a house around the time when Australia moved to dollars/cents currency and she collected some "old" notes for each of her children and hid them. About 2 years after she'd sold and moved on she remembered .... but by then the house had been renovated, I hope the builders found and enjoyed the bounty!

On the inside of the door to the cubby under the staircase, I left the marks I made to record the heights of my kids as they grew up, as well as those of us adults. My mom did the same thing on her kitchen wall. I couldn't bring myself to erase or paint over our marks that we were there!
