Thank you, wuff & chookchook. It's an odd thing, I always thought I was happiest in music, but I find in the autumn of my life I'm mindlessly contented mucking about in my garden. But I guess it has its own endless musics, the harmonies of the spheres, the squawks of the wattlebirds, the thrills and trills of the spinebills, etcetera, foraging and flapping and bathing, or just whooshing right on through...

Wow, I really like how the dresser has turned out! You are right about the leadlight being suited to the look... Maybe I will think a bit harder about painting my dresser. It is a piece of furniture we purchased for our engagement so don't really want to part with it but our tastes have changed. As for the sideboard, not too sure about painting that - it is some kind of original Australian piece from South Australia that was my in-laws. I think it's actually part veneer, not solid timber so perhaps won't point so well. Something to think about. :)

Dweeb, thanks, that is funny coincidently I was only looking at the table today thinking how happy I am with it. It has worked out well for the house, the room it was in is now a small sitting room, and the dining area with a white table is light and bright. It is such a soft white. I just love it still

Dweeb, I used chalk paint, you don't have to sand or prime, then wax

Hi tweeza, I used Annie Sloan chalk paint and Annie Sloan clear wax on the table. It took 3-4 coats of paint, Then the wax. I still love it. It has stood up very well. I even use spray and wipe on it occasionally. I will probably re wax the top again in a year or two. I also have done this small dresser. I took the table photo today just now. It looks just as good. Annie Sloan you don't have to sand or prime, but you do need to watch for thick drips, the one I did get I sanded back between coats to get a flat smooth surface, not the whole thing just the thick drips. I have a small electric sander took a couple of mins each drip, wax needs a couple of thin layers then buff. I used lambs wool pad on an electric drill for the sheen. You need to make sure wax is really dry before the buff, wait about a week would be my recommendation. I love the chalk paint ..so many pretty colours, the table colour is pure white and the inside of the dresser is Paris grey. There is an antique white as well, apparently the pure white is the thinnest of the colours and you need an extra coat compared to other colours.
