Door to Patio

I'm tossing and turning on this one. I want big industrial sliding doors that take you out to the patio. But others tell me bifold is better. Any suggestions as to which is a better option?

Like both but I know the big sliding doors can give you problems later down the track, so personally I would go for trifold

There is a third alternative.

Go industrial with a folding 'firehouse' door. It looks like a roll-a-door but is made with glass sections housed in metal frames.

Another bonus with this idea is that you have a 'roof' when the door is at full horizontal.

The Bricks are OK, if you like them, keep that round feature deck in the brick and render the rest, or stone clad the feature and render the rest, or cheapest of all just paint the rest in a dark warm neutral and render the round feature in a lighter but similar tone. You have the windows to consider. If you changed the colour of them you could also change the overall colour scheme from warm to cool. Although a black and white scheme is current, it looks better on timber houses and in suburban and inner city areas in my opinion. There are lots of different elements to your house which would look more integrated if you chose a warm colour scheme with a maximum of 3 colours. You can even make the bricks work if you paint upstairs a warmer colour to match them and changed the tiles and front steps to wood. Wood integrates everything in a warm colour scheme.

That's great advice re the colours Design Organisation, I've been trying to work out how to choose the right greys to create the same effect as the one in your photo (still looking for a door like it!) Unfortunately budget doesn't extend to replacing the gutters which are that very 80s primrose. I've spoken to builder re your suggestion about the width of the poles and we might now replace them with timber posts, you've been really helpful!

Yes new work will usually always make the existing look old. A good clean, etc will work wonders so try that first.

i prefer stackers, they don't stick out and are much easier to screen

Stacker doors are better. We've had both stackers and bifold. You can add fly screen doors (like CrimSafe) easy to stackers. If you want bid solid doors bifold don't hold up to continuous use as stackers. Also space savers.

Just make sure you can fly screen whatever option you choose. Also consider tinting which is quite inexpensive and gives privacy during the day.

Just done this - had stacker doors made to fit, could have had bifold however screens for bifold can't be crimsafe, so easily broken into or damaged by children or pets. We often leave the doors open at night with just the security screens locked. As ours are our front entrance and not the rear, security was important. Also bifold folding out without a wall or roof are open to the elements and can be damaged if open during a hi wind. Will weather quickly also. Bifold look great but you really need to decide if they need to have security screens etc. We had beautiful timber stackers made, as we get big winds occasionally and the bifolds would have folded out onto the deck with lots of sun - didn't want to be re lacquering every 6 months.

We have a 5.5m and another 4.5 opening and chose stackers. We were told during times of strong wind bifolds had a tendency rattle. I like you, love the look of bifolds but went with practicality. Area needed to be screened.

It depends on how much control of internal temperature you want. Is cross-breeze important, how much heat from sun on glass (not sure of orientation) will be trapped inside with one large slider fixed? Using Sliders you will lose 50% of cross-breeze and 50% of that great 'inside/out' feel. With stackers you may lose some space but you have the best of both, you can completely control temperature zones by opening one stackers to keep some warmth and a cozy atmosphere, or completely open to catch the breeze and gain open space. The security and insect reducing benefits of being able to install crimsafe with stackers are a bonus!

I think I have decided to go with the large sliding doors. Considering everything I'm positive they are the best option
