Because the style is quite modern eclectic, my thought was that a muted cow hide rug could work If you feel a bit more daring - these muted colours would echo the traditional carpet or failing that go for a high sheen textural rug that doesn't compete with the monochrome elegance

Agree that it is overdone...like the tram/rail/bus stop posters...the keep calm posters...cow hide rugs...hard to say what will grab the attention of the trend setters as mass marketable? Of course anyone who loves these items should have them as it is all down to personal taste. I prefer 2nd hand shops now for finding unique one off pieces fairly cheaply & these days & I feel good about recycling someone's cast offs as well! I found a lovely old copper platter recently & the store owner said "where did you find that?" I found it on the floor under a chest of drawers in a dusty corner & my heart skipped a beat when I saw it was only $10 & perfect for an empty spot I had!

As above you need some non slip mat underneath. Bunnings also have it. If you are brave you can add rows of silicon directly to underneath of rug.

Firstly, when you replace that rug, make the next one larger. The biggest mistake most punters make is to buy a rug that sits in front of the furniture and really only becomes a mat for the coffee table to sit on. Buy one large enough for at least the front feet of your sofa to sit on and that extends beyond the line of the surrounding furniture - so NOT a standard 160x230cm, maybe the next standard size up 190x280cm ( or thereabouts ). Jute would look good with the hide, but they can be mildly abrasive on a timber floor.
