I have had a similar problem having chosen and purchased travertine tiles for the bathrooms and kitchen and then we we decided to tile the rest of the living area and couldn't match the tile we already had, I was in a huge dilemma. Fortunately I found a plain tile in the same tone which should give my living area a different and moden look so my suggestion is to do as I did, and find a plain tile that matches the same tone as your existing tiles and you should be pleasantly surprised. I agree with above comments that more restraint would have helped showcase the marble more effectively. Marble is a beautiful material and expensive so worth careful consideration in application, sometimes less is more.

I actually had a marble counter in a flat I lived in in Europe for a while. I knew nothing about maintenance so just treated it like any other hard surface, and it looked fine (and I wasn't the first person to live in that flat, I assure you). It's more common in Europe, and not so much trendy there as classic. But Europeans aren't quite as finicky as North Americans and Australians seem to be about flawless and unblemished finishes.

when i think of subway tiles i think lots of grout - which i personally dislike. but put in what makes you smile and happy! we have gone super large tiles to reduce the amount of grout :)
