Bathroom layouts

In our new house both the bathroom and the ensuite are the same size 3100x2000. We would like a bath in the main and a walk in shower in the ensuite.

Is this size too small for a bath?

would love people ideas on placement of bath, shower, toilet and vanity.

I have attached a couple of mock ups i have done.. Not sure if the shower will work in the middle of the room.....

I'm not certain from the view which end has the door vs window. For layout A (ensuite) I would rotate the walk in shower 90 deg so it is parallel with the 2000mm wall (eg. 900mm wide X 1100x 1200mm with or without door -perhaps a short return if no door to help contain splashes) with the entry at the window end of the wall and towel rails located here. The vanity can then be larger along the 3100mm wall with toilet next to it - perhaps swap position so that toilet is not the first thing you see from door. The shower could have a tiled nib wall to half height for further privacy/to hold the toilet roll, if you wished. For the layout B (main bathroom) I would suggest rotating bath so short side is under window with shower next to it on the 2000mm wall. The vanity could perhaps then sit on the same wall as the toilet and allow passage way to be on the door side. Not a heap of space for vanity and you might consider running a inset mirrored cabinet over the toilet to give more storage. Alternatively, we are doing a bathroom renovation in a 3000x2400 space and are making a feature of the bath at the far end with an open walk-in shower next to it (only one piece of glass rather than fully enclosed shower). Not sure it would work with the dimensions you have to work with though. The best representation of this layout needs a little more length to the room.

Hi Belinda, The comments above are very helpful, I would rotate the ensuite shower to along the far wall and use one panel of glass, and you could maybe look at putting in a double vanity if you wanted? For the bathroom, side by side shower and bath could work at the far end from the door, or shower over bath is always a good option. Good luck! :)

yes but I think it depends what market you are likely to be seeking in. if it's not family home market but more up market retirees then a glam spacious bathroom will win more plaudits from buyers than a cramped make-do space. I just strongly feel you should design your bathroom so it is a pleasure to use every day not just the one day a year you may want a bath (plus much as I like the style of bathroom Siriuskey has posted they really don't beg out for bathing in). But a vanity space where you can even have your own toothpaste if you like stripey and he likes plain and all stored neatly away so they never have to appear on display together and with a shower you can lift your arms up in is priceless if you ask me.

For a budget Reno I’d repair the wall with the leak. Luckily it’s outside the wet zone and you can open it up and repair without having to match tiles. I’d consider replacing the whole wall with a VJ Product. I’d then keep all the fixtures in the same place and essentially not disturb the structure of the rest of the bathroom. Using tile paint I’d paint all the tiles, replace the tap, rails, light and shower screen. With new paint and new decor you’ll have something that looks good, works, and doesn’t waste money.

I’d probably go with something like that. Def I’d not recommend changing from pocket door to hinge one. Hinge doors are mostly always troublesome in small spaces. I’d go with walk-in hobless shower with small glass panels attached to the wall and corner pivot door. That way you can close off shower to allow better access to the bathtub (if you’re a shower screen person). If you do not mind things getting a bit splashed, I’d go without the door even. Just create a shower “zone” by differentiating with varied tiles/decor. Definitely a tough nut to crack given you’d like the bathtub. Doable, indeed. Try choosing a flush (not freestanding) tub, otherwise it’s going to be a pain to clean. Try finding one with rounded outward corners within your budget it’s going to be better flow.

our long term experience with disabled and elderly family members reinforced our decision to include walk in shower and toilet spaces with enough floor space for a carer, shower chair and wheelchair, there are grab rails for toilet and shower, hand held shower with taps accessible from outside edge of shower for the carer as well as from a seated position.. big shower spaces with extra tall shower curtains are so much better for easy access with safety and privacy than glass shower doors, all towel rails are certified grab rails, wall hung toilets with concealed cisterns are installed higher off the floor and the vanities are also wall hung to allow for extra floor space for waste basket and easy cleaning and there's enough dry floor area for a chair to help with dressing and undressing away from wet areas.....the main bathroom with shower, toilet and vanity to be used by the disabled person with carer is about 3.5m x 3m plus an extra alcove for the special disabled bath tub ...planned carefully in advance rather than modified later allowed the bathrooms to look and feel comfortable and spacious for all users rather than just disabled friendly

shower over bath would save room..this is ours only needed 1.9m by 2m with a sliding door..

so you've got plenty of room..you've got 1m to squeeze in your shower..

I'd place the shower (walk in) right next to the bath..you'd only need a pane of glass about 1100mm wide to prevent the splashing like the photo above from scottevie..

then the vanity can go opposite your toilet like mine..

you'd need to leave at least 800mm for your toilet if you're popping toilet ..bath..shower vanity all in a row..might be a bit tight with that configuration..

Thanks for the advice everyone. In the ensuite I really wanted the shower along the short wall but was not sure about having a window so close to such a wet area as we will have wooden Windows.
The main I have done another sketch up attached. I think it will work well like this.

Hi Belinda, if you want a bigger shower in the ensuite the other option is the loo under the window, then the shower can be made longer. Don't forget to pencil in towel rails, power points, and allowance for door clearances.

Keep moving things around till you're happy with the dimensions and layout, and you'll find what works best for you in each space. :)
