How to paint a roof you can't stand on?

I have a sloped awning over my front patio. It's covered in mildew and dirt etc. I've tried high pressure hose cleaning it but I couldn't get high enough and sturdy enough on a ladder. I had a painter come out who said he couldn't stand on it to paint so he wanted to take it down but I'm worried about getting it back up. He didn't have trestles but I'm not sure he could use them anyway as there's a big drop down in the yard to our driveway. To replace it is too expensive and it's perfectly sound structurally. I want it painted anyway to match our new trim colour but am at a loss. Was wanting to keep the cost of this minimal. Any ideas?
