Multi-function room needs help
I have a new large room in my house following the tearing down of a wall. It is set to serve as an office (with techline furniture), a guest room (Murphy bed and there is a bathroom), and general sitting room with large TV. I've laid out my existing techline furniture and the couch, two chairs, end table and coffee table that I already own. I think it might be too crowded and I don't know how else to arrange things. Room is about 24' long (left to right in photo) and 14.5' wide (top to bottom in photo).
Additionally, there is no floor selected as yet. Used to be carpet, but now considering laminate or porcelain wood look tiles. Advice on both please!

Comments (5)Em - sorry you got pounded with our latest sales lurker. Real designers and gifted hobbyists want to help you here. The color in your art over the fire could be your inspiration for color accents, and I do think that full length panels on the windows might be a good start to help it feel warmer this winter. I wouldn't expend money on blinds, only drapery panels but you understand your privacy situation better than I. Run the curtain hardware well past the window, so when the sun is out your panels can stack back to the sides. What do you think about adding some blue-greens? If we get a muted enough one, it will be lovely on the walls with the mantel wood tones and should harmonize well with all the neutral upholstery, wood floor and rug., as well as deal with the gray stone and silver fun ball well. The sofa wants to breathe a little away from the wall I think as well. A narrow end piece there (maybe a yard sale find that you paint a deeper shade?) and shifting the rug away from the wall will help the room itself feel bigger because everything won't be tight to the corners. I see you have somelovely fine art - Van Gogh will always outpace the rest. A simple wood frame can be stained to match the gorgeous wood on the mantel piece. Your home has some lovely detailing. Might I suggest you drop the art over the fireplace about 12" and layer one additional piece leaning on the mantel? The starry night piece also needs a frame and perhaps a different wall paired with the earth chart for contrast and whimsy - you can alway mount something like that with spray adhesive to a painted heavy cardboard or frame it in a much larger frame with a custom cut mat. If I were adding a third neutral here with the suggested blue green I would play off the gray slate of the fire and use charcoal. Comments (3)The visual artist needs the window - so position easel? or other working items where the keyboards currently are . . . and start working from there. The blue sofa cushions - maybe hang them against the walls (they could function as pinboards?) - but I think you need something to deaden the sound - or your neighbours may hate you. Rugs on the floor and the thickest drapes you can afford (or improvise with blankets) for the window. Hmmm . . . maybe artist towards the right-handside (door-side) of the window - trestles in L shape along the long wall, and a bit of the window to make 2 desks - and musician's stuff occupying the wall adjacent to the door and into the centre of the room? Comments (9)1. Delete current door location and have a full wall on the MPR/Entry side. Relocate the access to the MPR/Dining wall, but choose a flush cavity sliding door so that you don't loose any wall space (in the MPR) against which you can place furniture. The cavity door can be as wide as you want or even double cavity doors and flush ones will be completely inset in the walls when opened creating a seamless opening to main living area 2. MPR is 5.3 wide so big enough to create two zones: A. a lounge area with tv unit (built-in with plenty of storage if you can) against the garage wall, an L-shaped couch with the return/chaise part against the kitchen wall, one or two bean bags near the window wall and a large rug to frame it all B. second area would be a built-in desk (with extra storage and shelves if possible) along the full length of the entry wall, which is wide enough for two computer stations (don't forget your data points) and when the door is open you can see what they're up to from the kitchen ;) Good luck!...See MoreI need some help updating this room! Comments (53)I have not read all of the above. It must be tempting to render and paint the fireplace but if it is decided to work with it then maybe you can find your colour palette in the bricks. The new grey carpet will give you a fresh neutral but grey can be very cold. you might need a bit of warmth in the others colors chosen for walls or soft furnishings. If you extend the tile base in front of the fireplace that will give another opportunity to introduce more impact with the tiles. There are always lots of gorgeous tile options. Here are my flooring choices. Wood look tile vs. laminate vs. carpet. Coloring is a little off, the difference between the laminate and the tile is not as much as shown here. Sorry about the lighting. The existing tile in the adjacent/connecting room is laying on the tile samples. The furniture in this room is Techline modular office furniture in Cherry finish mixed with Maple desk tops and accents. Sample of the cherry finish also in the photo. I live in a hot climate so warm floors are not a consideration...actually would like cool ones!
