Help me update my old kitchen
Comments (7)My first suggestion would be to change the bench tops to a light colour - (antique white) ceaser stone or granit depending on your budget. Replace Tiles above the sink, again a light cream/ antique white colour splash back either in glass, creaser stone or a tile. Looking at the photos you have posted and also reading your post about the interior of your home featuring brick and western red cedar timber. My next suggestion would be to stay with a timber kitchen ( the western red cedar) a different style cupboards instead of the loover doors. As I feel that lighter coloured kitchen cupboards would look odd and not suit the style of your home. Your floors remove the green carpet tile( I think this is what they are?) and replace with a light coloured tile, extending to your family room. Comments (20)Timber with timber can work brilliantly, and it's in keeping with the mid century style you want for your home. This room (below) is a little similar to yours, albeit with less of a pitch to the roof - the large feature lighting helps to break up the expanse of timber on the ceiling. You have a lovely open plan area, so I'd be inclined to use rugs to create zones and a cosy feel. Rugs reduce the impact of a large expanse of flooring material. They have the benefit that you can swap things around to change the look and layout at little cost. I think one trick may be to define your "walls" carefully, and paint these before you go with a new floor. This should give you a sense of whether the timber is overwhelming, and how to balance it. E.g. You might decide it works best to paint the kitchen cupboards to white, to give you a more seamless look and work with your new counter tops. If you want to experiment with the "paint ceiling" approach - gulp, it's a big one!! - then maybe that small section above the kitchen bench, at a different angle to the rest of the roof, could be the spot. It seems to have the same horizontal line as the wall, so even if you don't like the painted look for the whole, you might be able to get away with blending this into the walls. Best of luck!...See Morewhere can i buy timber look shelves for kitchen
Comments (7)This isn't a personal recommendation as I have not yet purchased anything from this company, but I've been admiring the timber floating shelves on their website. https://shelvingshop.com.au/product-category/floating-shelves/wood-effect-finish/ Or you can buy the brackets and have the shelf custom made in whatever material and size you want. https://shelvingshop.com.au/product-category/brackets-2/floating-shelving-brackets/ I think hardware stores also sell brackets by themselves. I was thinking of going the custom route because that means I can ensure the brackets will be attached to the studs. I believe you can paint melamine after proper preparation of the surface, but I doubt if you can stain it....See Morewhat combination of black/white/timber should i choose for my kitchen?
Comments (28)Before choosing any surface, do the finger test, unless you are house clean slave. The finger test is see what marks show with a slightly greasy(hand lotion) fingers. Most blacks show finger marks big time. Same with counter tops. Best test is scatter with bread crumbs, if that disturbs you forget it, otherwise you will be kitchen cleaning all day. The same goes for concealed handles, they quickly get full of crusted much and chip easy. A working kitchen needs to be practical, easy to clean and totally family proof....See More- 9 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
