Timber or white shelves for my new kitchen?
Comments (14)I would have your bench top supplier cut a thin batten of timber in the same 40mm thickness, and fix this as a front to a white melamine shelf. For a couple of reasons. Melamine is easiest to keep clean, whereas a varnish or oiled timber will require constant maintenance and resealing if it is used often, it will discolour and even with the sealant it does not like moisture, being natural, all timbers expand and contract in temp changes. Melamine is stable, and won't be seen from the viewpoint, and the timber front will make it look more substantial. Secondly, this thickness will be necessary to avoid shelf deflection, where lengths over 900mm will commonly sag under weight. Reinforcing your shelf with timber battens will avoid this, and the timber edge strip again hides it. If all this seems a little too hard, just invest in solid timber shelves of around 40mm, but have the tops laminated....See MoreWhat colour of white should I paint my internal rendered walls?

Comments (6)Jodie, Dr Retro is on point with comments/advice.....this goes for all decision making in building/renovating/design/interiors etc...it's about balancing and identifying what is the feature and being consistent/appropriate to the ideal direction. If you want to keep your furniture then great but you need to work to it an it will to a certain degree define the project direction - so be clear/confident about this and let the feature elements "breathe" and not be over taken by the secondary aspects - it's actually really really hard to do in this day and age with so many "on trend" things being pushed in your face from all angles. I try and advise clients to be true to themselves and learn to understand/clarify with confidence what they like and why and this can take time to educate/gain knowledge/understanding in this regard.....I agree with Retro - try and go for finishes that are offsetting/contrasting to the significant timber furniture feature as otherwise you'll risk having timber overload ;) Hope this helps, good luck :) PD...See MoreWhich profile should I choose for my kitchen-cupboard fronts?
Comments (4)A practical advantage of the long-side only design is that it removes the pesky corners/shelf produced by the bottom rail that collects dust. Big bonus with a white kitchen...See More- 4 years ago
