PRO8 years agoSorry to hear that you are covering over those oregon rafters and putting in downlights. The rafters have so much character and ceilings like yours aren't built today due to the expense of sourcing such large, long bits of timber. The downlights are only going to contribute to the blandness of the room. Save your harsh and unforgiving downlights for task areas, not your living areas. With a ceiling of that height I would be considering some nicer pendants, some wall washers and uplighting to celebrate the space and character that you have, rather than making it look like a bland, hospital waiting room.

Choosing the perfect colour involves addressing many issues...size of your windows, orientation of the house, height of ceilings, size of rooms, purpose for room to name a few. Comments (17)How about trying to get some recycled floorboards to replace the chipboard and have them both sanded and polished and is necessary stained the same before polishing. This would look more authentic and add character and warmth. Hopefully you can find someone who appreciates what you are trying to do and can help source the boards. This would also help you to level the floor as spending a lot of money and still having a wonky floor is not an ideal outcome unless it is part of the character of the property.
