Is this composite decking?

Hi there
This looks like composite decking.
I’d love to know what brand it is and to hear any views on its performance. How would it cope in an Australian climate where we experience some 40 degree days in Summer?
Very grateful for any insights.

Hi Heather, this is actually treated lumbar that the builder used before my clients purchased the home. It's held up fairly well, but I do believe composite wood like Trex would serve you better (https://au.trex.com/). Though you can't see in this photo, there were places where the treated lumbar was splitting or compromised from water/salt air since this home is on the intracoastal waterway. Also, the builder didn't use galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel nails so the nails were rusty in some places. Parts of Adelaide Hills are bushfire prone so timber may not be the best option. Look at using 'Inex' decking boards as they are a cement based 'decking board'. They can be stained using the same as for timber. Composites are ok in particular 'Modwood' which is of a very good quality. What about tiling over FC sheet that way it's just a regular sweep and a good wash.

Timber Decking near pools does look great! We do get lots of enquiries for replacing rusted timber connectors in decking areas near pools (usually replacing with our Stainless Steel Timber Connectors), that's not to say don't do decking, just make sure its done right! I've been doing a lot of research on composite decking. Have narrowed down to TimberTech and Trex composite decking. Both are US products. For people who have installed either of these products in Australia, I'm seeking your opinion and advice. Also, do you know any builder who is qualified to install either TimberTech or Trex composite decking in Sydney?

Like Dr Retro, I’m not aware of such a paint product, which is not surprising given you are making 2 big asks for the paint: Firstly, for external flooring which would be subject to abuse/harsh conditions from foot traffic, furniture (eg chair scrapes) and weather. Secondly, to the surface you want to apply to as this is a much harder for the paint to latch onto. If you do find a possible paint solution I would love to hear about it. If there isn’t such a product at least in the lounging/dining areas of your deck you could put a large outdoor rug to detract and shift focus away from the decking colour.
