Backsplash thoughts...
Aloha! Just wanted to get everyones thoughts and opinions on the backsplash we have chosen. Countertops will be Silestone Expo Gray and cabinets are pictured in shaker style white. I really like the backsplash we have chosen. It has a little white, gray and some hints of earth tones to it. Also walls will be painted SW Repose Gray. Open to DR and LR with good natural light and home facing East/West.
My question really is what are your thoughts one this? I am only wondering if it will age well and not become dated in the next several years. Most likely we will be here 5+ years at least. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Comments (20)My comment may be a little too late but I have designed many kitchens where it improvement in isolation would solve nothing so I would alwYs recommend thinking about and addressing the entire open space you are in when wanting to improve it. Your comments lead me to think perhaps you want to spend as little as possible while getting he biggest impact possible. I agree with many comments and think Ain't it the first answer. The kitchen cabinetry call all be painted easily as they are timber, the oven drew my attention, and would need to be a priority upgrade if ever to sell, it looks very old. So if nothing else, take. It out and the under cabinet and replace it with a freestanding, source online auctions, eBay or clearance warehouses you will find many to choose from, and a 900mm oven will make life easier, it will also give you an in line bench top height and expose some more backsplash, which is my next point of consideration. The brick here dominates your eyeliner, so using adhesive, apply fibre cement sheeting to the splash back and tile it in a light tile, if you use led lighting, under the top cupboards would be great as they would illuminate the bench top and splash back instantly making your kitchen feel brighter and ambient. Secondly, this new brightness your kitchen will have will contrast with the darker adjoining room, which will only make the dark seem darker, so you need to gradually address the adjoining room with something from the kitchen, and horizontal surfaces are a great place to start as the cover the entire area like a blanket, so the floor is tile, and difficult to change without major time or money, so on the ceiling, your beams are a beautiful feature and every room has a part of the architecture that will work to your advantage, here are yours, although th ceiling in between agreed is not great. You can buy timber battens from hardware stores very cheaply per mtr, the pine 45mm x 18mm will do, fix them to the inside of the beams along the longest sides, and then either nail to those lining boards, which I would paint white or the same as the kitchen cabinets. Or you can buy lining board sheets, it may be the single biggest cost, but will be the single biggest improvement thT you Nd future buyers will appreciate. Leave the beams timber to work with what you have. Lastly, the brick wall that comes from th kitchen onto the lounge area, I would paint them also, not in a white again the contrast will be too strong, perhaps in a warmer shade, like a coffee tone. This cladding I mention would also look great along the back of the kitchen breakfast bar, and you will double the size with these improvements. I know it involves cost, but with structural elements and big spaces, it always will cost you, just choose where improving will have the biggest impact and go for it. Comments (5)Marble is a beautiful stone. You will need to have it sealed regularly (every 12-18 months and unfortunately if you're a keen cook you should be warned that it can stain and acidic things like lemon juice and vinegar need to be wiped up immediately. I say this as if you're anything like me you tend to share a lot of your cooking with your splashback. The alternative would be to look for a caesarstone type material in a marble pattern - Caesarstone and similar products don't need sealing, aren't porous and are more stain resistant. (also.... how much more expensive is thus going to be that tile? It came up as an idea from a prospective buyer when I had the house on the market a couple of years ago as he had 4 children. I changed my mind about selling in the end and figured while I was doing the kitchen I would have a chippie put up the wall and door at the same time. Don't need another bedroom myself but it could be a "man-cave" or study instead of the current use as storage area for "stuff" and maybe an advantage later for any new buyer. The pantry on the other side looks interesting but would mean losing the larger island wouldn't it? Food for thought. I am glad you think the existing cabinetry could be re-used as that was my plan. EVERY tile on this page will be dated in five years. I mean, come on, who's to say that a tile won't be dated just because they like it? Lunada Bay tiles have been around since I was planning my kitchen eight years ago and they look dated to me. Judging by the hex you picked out, I think you are also more drawn to an organic look than a shiny bling look.
Hex is commonly used as bathroom flooring so some of us do associate it with that application. The elongated hex is more of a kitchen backsplash shape imo.

7 years agoNeutrals certainly endure. I usually stick with neutrals on the items that are more expenisve to remove and replace. Color is for paint and accents.
i went with what all the kids are doing on the backsplash....marble subway. It’s really tough for that to be dated at any point in my distant future.
I would agree that diagonal tiles are more bathroom like. My shower floor is diagonal

If you have already decided on marble subway, you might want to think about how you want to lay out the tiles.
I like this look of the stacked bond (rather than the staggered) it is interesting and the whole world doesn't have it.
You also might want to think about a slightly grey grout rather than a stark white.

Marble subway tile is not going to be dated - it's been around for a long time. Don't use a contrast grout, and make your grout lines as narrow as possible. This is how I did mine - large subway tiles, fewer grout lines, white Carrera marble.
