Front porch spruce up

Any ideas for making my front porch look better on the cheap? Money is tight but this area of my front house needs a bit of a facelift... thinking resurfacing with perhaps a stamp? Pressure washed it yesterday and now you can notice the small exterior cracks

Comments (9)Hi, I would recommend something like Grisilinia ardmore (NZ Native) along the wall which will create a really nice lush back drop for your new garden. I would then step down to plants such as Lomandra Titan or Tanika for that middle layer and then finally down to a ground cover which will help surpress the weeds and add another layer. The other thing to consider is typically lemons like a high amount of fertiliser which most other plants won't tolerate so bare that in mind with any chosen variety. Finally I would recommend removing the weed mat, although from a maintenance point in can be great, from a horticultural perspective it starves the soil and creates a real imbalance for moisture. Once its removed, I would also cultivate in some compost which will help the plants thrive. Once this is successfully planted re mulch with bark or another mulch. The established the plants will naturally suppress any weeds so its a little bit of short term pain for long term gain, your new plants will thank you for it. Comments (7)This was my thinking about that pantry window (and there has been a lot of thinking, to my draughtie's despair!) : I guess it comes down to the fact that this is a renovation rather than a new-build, so it will always involve compromises. I chose to have the pantry on that front side rather than the back in order to get big stacking sliding doors across the whole back wall, which is north-facing - where the kitchen-dining area will open onto a deck. I have ensured that the renovation plan works with the current layout as much as possible, rather than forcing it to be something it isn't (I had a more complex design done initially, that was much more expensive, because it was trying to make the layout like you might see in a new build). Having said that, it also has to be functional and work for the lifestyle we have in this era. I think our floorplan achieves that - with the only minor point of contention now being that rather unobtrusive pantry window! I think for resale, and for the majority of people, if it came down to a choice between having a walk-in pantry with a window that isn't the same height/width as the others at the front of the house, or not having the WIP, the WIP would come out well ahead....See MoreWhat to do with unused front porch?
Comments (4)I would start by dressing the wall. A large decorative metal screen or mural would provide a welcoming backdrop. It would be great if you could get some colour onto or in front of deck. You would have to look at shad loving plants at your local nursery. Comments (58)Hi, use the cat as inspiration because its colours are beautiful - (a black white and tan rug would add a little wow) and its hair will blend in too. Next just add in small touches of a green you like and more of the base colours in rugs, throws, cushions etc. As for furniture if you follow decor trends it is now the thing to NOT have matching furniture sets in the bedroom but the trick is to link everything through colour. I suggest a picture rest shelf (Bunnings) running along the back wall above the bed at eye level. Pictures (and a mirror) and bits and bobs are then on one level, look intentionally placed, keep things tidy and out of reach of little hands and you can mix and swap as seasons and events change. Plants yes, they give colour and life, then a bit of wicker/rattan or other texture in plant bases, a chair or foot stools at the end of the bed. Some nice green glass vases or candle holders etc. etc. Easy changes that allow you to save for when you want to do your big reno. 5 years agoPaint your porch and steps same colour as guttering, choose some beautiful planters and plants, a new more modern light fitting and finally a fab new mat... gorgeous

Thanks all! I decided to just bite the bullet and spend a little extra and got it tiled...so glad I did it made a massive difference! Now just for a nice big light to replace the small one I have and a pergola down the track when money allows.
