Agree with big reader comments, new handles and a bit of paint. I would not take down the wall cabinets. They provide needed closed storage. Because as your already open shelves prove, if you have open shelves they will be messy and negate the feeling of more space.

Could you actually add doors to the open shelves you already have. Maybe need squaring off before that is possible.

Surprise , surprise -- I look at it differently !

Okay , the wooden handles are a bit dated , but to me the 2 sins are the floor tiles and the lemon paint . I could live with everything else -- the cupboards would come up okay with a sand and a crisp white paint ( I assume they are some type of board , not laminated ? ) ; the white splashback tiles suit ; the bench is okay , and in fact the wood edging is not only a nice touch , but also ties in with the handles .

The cupboards etc may not even need a paint , but the lemon does , and ideally I'd go a charcoal textured low sheen floor tile with charcoal grout , but of course that will create a big problem -- do you do the other areas too ( looks like maybe a laundry or hall , and the dining area ) , or do you leave the other areas in that once-trendy faded edge tile ? In the kitchen , they ( and the lemon ) scream 1980's , whereas most other items are a bit 'period fluid' -- a charcoal tile will change the look IMO . Thats where I would spend my $$ first , but then you aren't me and vice versa .

Another consideration is to make sure in the kitchen spruce up, that you install more power points, instead of having the power board.

You are right about power and yes more power points are being installed

Every room in this 4 bedroom house had a different colour. We are steadily painting Dulux whisper white throughout.

As previously mentioned it would be an expensive item to change the flooring which appears to be in several spaces

I would consider painting the lower cabinets low sheen black, keeping the timber kickboard and benchtop trim and even timber knobs on the painted cabinets. New U shaped stainless handles on wall cabinets, using the knob hole and adding the second hole parallel to that.

You could even use a Bunnings laminated timber bench for the cooktop area
