Ensuite layout dilemma

I am having second thoughts about my ensuite layout (see V1) and would love some advice please. It is a small 2.1m sq space off the walk-in-robe. No window, but new skylight is going in. Plumbing is staying much the same is is except we have flipped the shower head and the toilet, so the toilet is immediately to your left as you enter through the cavity slider. This way the toilet is hidden from view.

With V1 there is little to view as you look through the robe into the en-suite, although the larger skylight will definitely lift the space. I wanted to avoid an enclosed shower with its boxy look.

With V2, you would see the vanity and arched mirror through the robe, however it would be a tighter fit in terms of circulation space and entry to the shower is small. You also have your back to the opening when standing at the vanity.

Also, would you add a feature tile in such a space?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

I think both layouts work to an extent. We have a very small ensuite too, but ours is a little longer and thinner than yours. I understand not wanting to box the shower in, but I think you will find that without a door the floor will get very wet. I would do a full length screen with door on version 1.

If you want a feature tile, then go for it. We elected to do our walls and floor, including the shower walls, in the same tile, but added a mosaic feature to the back of the shower niche. This meant that the space looked bigger (we went with a 300x600 tile), but you still had a slight accent spot.

I think in your layout, you could do something like a horizontal stripe just above the vanity height right around the room, and that would add some interest, just keep the colours light so that it doesn't close ths space in

Hi Paul In apartments, the killer for layout changes are always drains, then water supply, then load bearing walls. Before you consider doing any changes to the layout, I would advise you to locate the drains (pics would be good) as they will likely restrict you. The drains are important for obvious reasons but also important is the fall (ie downward slope) of any drain you wish to install in a separate location. It means you have to take into account more height the further away from the existing drain you go. It is likely that your existing laundry trough/basin has a drain going down to the floor, and this is going to interfere with the proposed ensuite entry location. Ditto if it is going into the wall. The big one is the new shower. It will need to have a 50mm waste (drain) in the centre of where your washing machine now is.... and the question is where is it going to go.... I would suggest swapping the vanity and shower over to access the existing trough waste if it is large enough. In a lot of these older apartment buildings, the waste sizes are down at 38mm, which is not going to drain fast enough for a shower. If your existing waste is that size, you will need to have a hob to the shower as it will fill up, and you will also need to check health regs to see if it is allowed in your state. To get the drain for the new ensuite vanity and new laundrette sorted, I would punch through the new kitchen wall and run drainage along the wall behind the new cupboards and around to the existing kitchen sink waste. This will give you plenty of fall and a place to hide the pipes. For the new basin to the existing, you will need to see if you can get it around to the existing basin waste in the bathroom adjacent by running it around and under the bath. Cheers

Here is my finished ensuite. 1.8 x 1.8 m bathroom. it works well as a layout. the shower is 900x 900mm. the vanity is about 280mm deep and the sink hangs over the edge a bit (if that makes sense!). the shower door is 550mm wide. i havent yet had the towel rail installed but when i do it will be on the left hand side wall. thank you everyone for all your advice and suggestions.

using the available space the storage walls in the wiw could be about 30cms wider than the existing biw but the ens is smaller without enough space for a vanity...moving the wall would create more wiw but the ens is still not long enough for more than a 1200 wide vanity so for all the trouble and expense of an extension (that will need council approval and fees) there isnt any real improvement on what you already have and the linen storage has also been lost...

Swapping the shower with vanity would still look good. You could have an opaque shower screen. Also with the current layout the shower recess would be reflected in the vanity mirror anyway. This would also keep the wet area on one side, bath and shower, and the dry areas on the other, toilet and vanity. The only negative is that the toilet looks private with the current layout and shower wall. Moving the vanity may make the toilet less private.

Here you go. Noting we are extending the space from 1780mm to 2100mm. The door is 710mm wide and 2100 high.

Do you have more floorplan you can share, ie: WIR and bedroom. What is the position by measurement of the door from each wall

As mentioned by Kaye Davey, the walk in shower screen will not be long enough to keep water spray out of bathroom. A walk in shower needs ideally a minimum 1100mm length screen. Anything less and you will be having a wet floor in the front of the vanity. I would opt for a shower door in both designs.

I have the version 1 ensuite with a full length bench like your other plan. I have a little water on the floor, not much but am not bothered, it doesn't reach the bench. my towels are visible from the entry as they are on that wall, I have nice towels so I don't mind that

Using version 1, I would flip the shower head to other end, install the vanity all the way to shower wall. Have your walk in shower entrance on the toilet end. 1100mm screen, and a 1000mm opening.

That's exactly what I was going to draw dreamer but was wanting to see the original bathroom and connecting rooms etc, as moving toilets can be an unnecessary expense.

You didn't mean to put the toilet in the shower as drawn I hope, sorry that's your shower head?

Think about where towel rail will go. And toilet roll holders. They need to be screwed into noggins and sliding door cavities can be tricky

we added reinforced wall lining over the sliding door cavity so we could install towel and grab rails without any problem

Sounds a good option just need to ensure it is specified and locate the door to fit the towel rails in
