Design Dilemma Bedroom

Small WIR and en-suite design

Hi all - was looking for advice on the best layout for our master bedroom/en-suite/Robe. The space we have isn’t huge, so I would like to maximise the storage and feel that a WIR would achieve this better. Yellow markups are my idea but just not sure if it would work. We can’t move the left wall. Appreciate any advise. Thanks Michelle

we need to see the whole floor plan for all the existing rooms with dimensions and what is the depth of the extra space added to the ensuite ie 900 x ?

Wir are not usually as efficient as a standard robe, but it does depend on space. Would you consider losing some space in the bedroom?

reluctant to lose the convenience of outside access to a toilet my suggestion sacrifices a little space off the lounge and bedroom to keep the extra toilet and use the original laundry space for a bigger ensuite with separate toilet and double vanities, the new extension makes a more spacious wiw with only standard doorway openings to the new rooms but the ideal outside door for the laundry will depend on the location of the drying area and you may decide that a western door or no outside door (and walk through the verandah?) could both add more counter space to the laundry and, much as i like the gable roof for the extension, it would be interesting to obtain a comparative quote for a simple skillion roof (and raked ceilings for the new laundry and wiw) that may save a lot of extra roof structure that doesn't add anything to the inside of the new rooms or streetscape and could be much cheaper..

with the available space there's very limited options and likely that the existing ensuite already has a shower at one end and toilet at the other with sink in the middle..could you have storage pushed inside a wall cavity and/or is there any space available in any adjoining rooms?i

Thanks Margot, north is to the right of the plan above, but the master and theatre (east) face natural bushland, and the master is not to the right of the design due to cars entering on each street coming towards that corner (street to front and right). Being a corner block we wanted to keep as much privacy for the master if possibly. We plan on a full fence to enclose the back bedrooms and following that a white picket fence or other permeable fence around to the front, with trees planned on the north and east sides. It can get quite hot in summer here so not hugely worried about heat and sunshine etc. Also wanted the master to face the natural bushland. The garage could go on the boundary, though adds more cost and there is a small power dome so the driveway would need to curve around that. We have taken on board feedback for the bedrooms and powder at the back. Will have a play around and see what we can shift to make the bedrooms bigger etc. Thanks so much for the help :)

Thank you for your feedback. I agree with your comment on the main bathroom. That layout is from the original 1984 house build, so it's something I'd like to address, but I don't quite have a vision of how to get around that yet. The second living area you mention was a discussion point during design, but we felt gaining the extra bedroom, robe and bathroom had higher importance. Our thought process was that bedroom 3 could always be opened up off the main entrance and converted to a small second t'v room if we needed it (3.4m x 3.1m). We also converted a 6m x 6m garage to a living area with tiled floor, insulated walls, air con, couch and t.v etc, so having that space swayed the decision to go with an extra bedroom and bathroom.

Thanks for the replies- I can’t change any other part of the floor plan of the existing rooms. I also can’t move the wall to lose some bedroom space. I’m feeling very stuck! Apologies for missing the depth measurement - it’s 1600. Appreciate the responses.

Within the yellow areas, looks like you will replace most of robe and linen to get a wir with similar storage space, so no net gain and the en-suite would be smaller. R u happy with a smaller en-suite? Smaller shower and single vanity?

Agreed - I am sacrificing some en-suite space to do the WIR with the outcome really being to make the master bedroom a bigger open space. Is a WIR that is 1500 x 1800 enough to have hanging and shelving? Then on the en-suite, what is the best layout of the en-suite that will maximise the remaining space.

using the available space the storage walls in the wiw could be about 30cms wider than the existing biw but the ens is smaller without enough space for a vanity...moving the wall would create more wiw but the ens is still not long enough for more than a 1200 wide vanity

so for all the trouble and expense of an extension (that will need council approval and fees) there isnt any real improvement on what you already have and the linen storage has also been lost...
