Plant selection

last year

I was hoping i could get some advice in selecting plant would be great. we need one tree in corner of the front yard

as we are corner block. also any other suggestions on the rest of the garden bed would appreciated. Currenky i have pulled out eveeyrhing i dont want and j would get rid of the nandina as well

Great house, if possible I would replace the garden edging with something a little more modern, could be metal or a black edging to compliment the house, a blend of informal and structural plants would look gorgeous, the soft rounded foliage of pittosporum’golf ball’ adds the formal look, great plant selection website bigreader suggested.

Not that I know a great deal about plants (yet) but you may want to include what your climate is and location (shade of a building part of the day or direct sunlight) as this will effect peoples recommendations. for our area (hot sun, sandy soil), we are going for Crepe Myrtles and screens of jasmine and passion fruit vines for narrow spaces.

I agree with olidroo about the hedge. When I read your post Shelley, I assumed you wanted something low that would grow in front of the existing hedge, but that you'd still be able to see the hedge. Murrayas would work for a hedge of 2m or more, though I'm unfamiliar with the dwarf variety. The low-growing gardenia would be lovely, but I think they like some afternoon shade. Oldiroo also has a good point about consulting your local nursery as to what would grow in your situation - white agapanthus are very tough where I live in SE Qld. N83 suggested Myoporum parvifolium. This comes in different forms. I'd avoid the broad leaf form. We had some in our garden and it grew quickly and well and we thought - what a great groundcover. Then we realised that it was like it was sucking all the goodness from the soil, leaving nothing for the nearby plants, so we dug it all out. I've also got 2 fine-leafed forms. I like the pink one better as it's a neater plant, but quite low-growing which you may not want.

A forest pansy is a beautiful small tree, adding a water feature would add another dimension to your landscaping, this could be a low bowl or more formal feature, placed near your entrance in the garden bed it could look beautiful.

Thank you Julie. we have installed the corton steel edging at the back yard looks like the one sugessted. we are doing it in stages due to cost.

Yes corten edging can be a bit pricey , as you have black trim on your house, a black edging could look great, this one from Bunnings I have used , it’s flexible and looks modern and it’s easy to install, and would compliment your house .
