Kitchens Renovating

kitchen layout/ functioning

We are renovating our kitchen and are getting a cabinet maker in to do the kitchen. Attached are the current 3d design and layout with measurements.
I am just unsure of the functioning layout, and wondering what everyone’s thoughts would be.

These are the view on eithier side. The white cabinets next to the open shelves is a bi-fold appliance cupboard

I would swap the sink area with the fridge. The fridge should be accessible for everyone in the home, to access water, drinks, snacks, without having to go into the kitchen proper. If you put the sink where the fridge is, it will be hidden, so any dirty dishes, pots, would be out of sight. The sink would be accessible for your water need for appliances. So put the very long 6000mm back wall, laid out in reverse.

I suspect you might be thinking of breakfast as a cereal and toast thing. You might be able to corral the cereal and the bread in one area, with the toaster. But what about the folks that like omelets or poached eggs or pancakes? The thing is, breakfast items aren't as segregated (at least in my household) as you seem to envisage. I use cereal bowls for serving veggies at dinnner; I use all sizes of dinner plates, depending on what we're having for breakfast; and let us not speak of the cups and mugs that get used both for morning cappuccinos and evening espressos, depending on mood. Many of the dishes and appliances and pans I use for breakfast, are also used for other meals. So there's not a lot of point in creating a separate breakfast area unless you have a huge kitchen and an affection for duplication.

My concern would be having to go through the kitchen to get to the laundry, when inside the home. I understand the ease of access when arriving home with groceries or from sports games/work straight into laundry. But I'm thinking of ease of access when at home for dirty laundry. It makes the kitchen a thoroughfare.

my sister had to originally put her washer dryer at one end of the kitchen, european style. She actually found it way more convenient, and so when she got to upgrade and do over the kitchen, one end of the galley became the butlers pantry with washer and dryer in there as well. maybe it could work, but given all the advice above, I think avoiding moving walls is going to be important. Gosh, hopefully everyone's advice helps! Don't worry and take your time, I have been in my old house a year and I think i came up with 4 different floor plans before i realised what I needed to do. keep thinking it over and one day it will just hit you what needs to be done.

Thank you so much for all your comments and suggestions; they are truly appreciated. This is our first renovation, and we find it quite overwhelming. We really regret not employing a good designer! Regarding the window behind the kitchen, the current window is 2.7 x 1.2m, 900mm from the ground. If we go with the original plan, this window would have to stay as we can't afford to replace it with another window. If we move the laundry and pantry, then we could afford to replace the window with a splashback window. I'll upload a picture of the space tomorrow when it's light.

What depth does your cooktop need? I think it will interfere with the top drawers at the moment and you might need some filler panels and to adjust the remaining drawers. Are the walls fixed and not movable?

Move fridge away from end wall. Maybe swap with pantry so the fridge doors can open fully

Your kitchen is also closed off with only one entrance in and out. This could cause, if more than two people, to be on top of each other at breakfast/meal times. You know your family so this might be your ideal plan to have kitchen only accessible from one spot. If you have a busy household, you have a good size large kitchen, reduce the appliance cupboards and create an island. This will then give access to kitchen in two different ways.

Example of my thoughts. Back wall, left to right, wall ovens, sink, cooktop, fridge, pantry. Front wall, reduce cabinetry and create an island.

Thanks for the suggestion, this is an older layout option but the red line is a structural wall that can’t be taken out. You can see how the kitchen layout relates the the dinning and living area

As above you could end up with two drawer panels below cooktop to allow it to fit, You will also be very sorry if you have the fridge in the WIP, the far right is a much better position to allow easy family access and depending on the style of your fridge you may need a narrow filler or pullout pantry 200 between it and the wall to open fridge door if hinged on the RH side?
