Natural passive airflow, cross ventilation, working in this heatwave?
Comments (2)once our homes are allowed to heat up it's very difficult to cool them down because heat from warm air allowed in through open windows and doors is stored in the walls and floors and then released back inside the house as the outdoor temperature drops ..this heat sink effect is fabulous when you have a good sunny day in cold climates but challenging when we have extended periods of hot weather and especially challenging in your hot climates where homes need to be lightweight to minimise this passive heating effect and outlook and orientation need to be different than most advice available about these effects (which is usually aimed at retaining heat in cold climates). We have ceilings fans and cross ventilation in all major rooms, high windows with electric openers to increase the stack exhaust effect, maximum insulation in roofs and walls, double glazed windows, insulated internal window coverings and solid internal doors to restrict heat movement, wide eaves and/or verandahs and have substituted more lawns, trees and gardens for some paving but windows on the eastern side still allow sun to heat the house from early morning and windows on the west increase the effect till late evening and we now plan to install adjustable vertical screens on the outside of windows and verandahs to increase shading.. living in a cold climate we already have heating but we are now considering upgrading our heaing to include reverse cycle air conditioning but we're hoping the new screens will avoid the ac..good luck with your challenges...See MoreHelp please? Comments (26)Simon, 100% agree with OKlouise, she's on the right track..... I've done a stack of these types of things.....big projects, that call for professional solutions....what I would say as a start is that there are always various ways of achieving your needs. It's not just about the rooms, it about the quality of the spaces, the proportioning their connection/relationship to both the adjacent internal and external areas.....I'm guessing from the floor plan you have a lovely older home with some traditional character...depending upon your needs for the rear yard (pool??) I see opportunities here for alternative configurations that would open this thing up and let more natural/north light into the main living/kitchen areas.....if you want my 2 cents I think for a home of this scale no you shouldn't have to pop through the kitchen to get to the study...a study nook within a kitchen is OK but as a differentiated room that could potentially be used for other purpose (always good for the property value factor ;) )....its ALL in the planning, there's a lot of money involved here so make sure you get it right and if it doesn't "feel" right, then there's an issue.....clearly here you have priorities and vision for your study, and that's great, so make sure you get it right and that the outlook is how you want it to be - so it should, it's yours!.....but it's not a simple as just swapping the spaces around/over...floor plans are delicately balanced and carefully considered/arranged and when resolved properly/professionally they will just sit there and be unquestionably "right", appropriately scaled & proportioned, not awkward, representative of your specific requirements/priorities and balanced within the particular context.......See MoreDesign ideas for study room
Comments (10)Get a cabinet maker to custom build a work station across the entire width of that blank wall. As it is on full show I would recommend incorporating mainly cupboards and drawers so you can hide stuff away. Consider using a coloured polyurethane and nice stone bench top and cabinetry hardware, as it will be the first thing guests see when entering your home. Comments (9)1. Noise cancelling walls, if you have children, no matter where they are in the house, you can still hear them. 2. Space and or everything has a place, some people thrive in chaos, most don't. Have a drawer where you stuff things in so its out of your face and clean it later. 3. Surround yourself with inspirational things, some like posters with words, some like sculptures, books, games. Whatever motivates a person to get in the zone to do what is necessary in these rooms should be highlighted somewhere in the room if not everywhere in the room. 4. A clock, should try to limit yourself and set time frames for things so you know your on point. 5. Keep it a toy, food, junk, washing free zone. Don't have these things in this room period. 6. Calendar, planner something to get your task management on point. 7. Quality Electronics. Don't compromise as they date rather fast and this years computer will be next years paperweight. Buy something that can be upgraded with just parts for a few years. 8. Lighting, you need to make sure you can see what your doing, most people are on computers or laptops or an ipad these days, but old school still use pen and paper so having a desk lamp for night time or windows, solar lights during the day are also good. 9. Plants, we all know they help keep the air blah blah blah, but good oxygen means better brain processes. 10. If budget permits, NOT IKEA FURNITURE, its been done a gazillion million times and it still looks the same old boring blandness as it looks in the catalogue....See More- last month
