Sofa reupholster..don't know what colour to choose

I would like to reupholster our very comfortable couches but need advice as to colour and perhaps pattern. The room has dark brown carpet with dark brown feature wall. The other walls are a grey/light brown colour. Thanks everyone.

Thank you Mizzoki and Pauli, you've both got me thinking. Maybe a plush blue-ish velvet for the couches with gentle red/orange toned cushions as well as rug. Or have I got it wrong?

I forgot to say the reason I want to reupholster is because the cream colour keeps showing up too many marks.

Your room does not look that large. Instead of putting another rug on top of your carpet, I'd get some quotes on replacing the carpet with something lighter if you still want to have carpet. Or, replace the carpet with wood flooring and then add an accent rug to blend. Either option goes quickly with a professional and is worth the investment. Sometimes it's worth the extra money to have someone else do the installation, especially if you're pregnant and preparing for baby's arrival. Alternatively, you may just want to wait until after you've settled in a bit with your little one. Any of the rugs you suggested on top of that carpet will create a very disconnected look. Also, keep in mind you'd need some kind of pad to keep the rug from buckling ad sliding on the existing carpet which is additional expense. If you plan to put down wood floors and want to get started on the rug now, I'd go with the 2nd red one.

My Home Stylist - I really appreciate your feedback. The Noguchi coffee is really nice. I think I'm getting closer to finalising the colours. I've done my research and found these. Do you think they match? Coffee table I did my research and found something similar to the noguchi coffee table but in white (thought it'll suit the white ikea table). Dining Chairs I really love the chairs with timber legs but I've decided that since my apartment will be occasionally rented out I'll stick with a more conservative look. Bar Stool: Now that I have chosen a dark grey/steel leg dining chairs and an oak based coffee table, would a standard white barstool with steel leg still work well with everything else or is it starting to clash? I'd go a nice rich, deep warm red, maybe burnt orange. Lovely room, but could do with more colour. You could cool that down with some neutral tone cushions, or even chocolate. The room could carry some colour easily enough.

You seem to like very modern lines. I do too but in sofas I love a look that says comfort, sit on me, lie down on me and don't worry about messing me up!
For this reason I have 2 dark blue denim slipcovered sofas in my living room. The blue looks wonderful with everything. With your color walls blue would look good. You kind of need something to add a little brightness in my opinion. You can mix all sorts of blues and greens together for a very peaceful and restful look. Just my suggestions. I wish you success!

Ohh I love the velvet idea! I almost went with a turquoise velvet before I found my denim. If I am seeing your wall color correctly it has so much warmth I feel the cool color sofa would break it up some. I like a mixture of both cool and warm.

Your picture on the wall there is giving some good hints! I like the idea of denim blues or burnt umber tones.

Hi. Yes, I think picking up on orange in artwork would work well, but it could be in accent cushions if you are wanting a different solid colour for your couch. It's a very nice room, esp with the soaring ceiling.

With timber floor and lots of brown in the room you can only go BLUE

Have you priced the cost of reupholstering? It's not cheap. May not be your best option.

I really appreciate these recent comments, but Bigreader is spot on..the cost of recovering proved too much!! So my fix has been the new lamp..I tried to pick up the green in the photo on the wall. I still find the 'feel' of the room lacks a sense of comfort so will continue to try and find ..at reasonable cost...what's missing. Cheers.

Get another identical lamp and put it next to Tv .two is always nicer than one.

You need some colourful cushions on your sofas - try pick up on the green and red colours of the lamp and picture.

Agree with robandlyn. New cushions will give the room some life & are always a cheap update. A glass top coffee table would also be a nice addition if you can afford it. So you can see the big change it could make I have cobbled together a couple of pics see below - Pic One I have used traditional cushions as it appears that is your style. You could also use more modern styles as per pic 2. Whatever you choose you need to tie in all of your colours. Also agree with girlguides your painting could be lower on the wall.

Allanaspree thank you so much! What an impact. I always thought coloured patterned cushions would clash with the photo on the wall, but from your mockup I see that they can look fabulous. They really enhance the room. I'm going shopping for cushions today!! Many thanks for putting in such effort for me. Cheers.

I think you need to stay neutral to ensure that your couch and room colour are cohesive. The odd colour out ... that pops out at me when I first look at your photo's is the silver around the wooden TV cabinet doors. I would suggest long term (if you are keeping that furniture) that you try to incorporate more of that colour into the room to add balance...... but back to the couch. I would go fawn / beige colour and then you can add colour back into the room with cream / dark brown tones in cushions and maybe a casual throw.

Alternatively if you repaint the feature wall from brown to a darker shade of grey I would go with a medium grey couch which would also match in with the silver on the TV cabinet and then you could put a lovely textured silver / grey floor run between the couches and move your coffee table to the centre of the room / rug.

I bought the above very well known soft Brown Italian leather 3 seater above on ebay for $350 with the lge footstool. The 2xsinge velvet cream cost me $35 ea. The coffee table below, I bought from garage sale $35. I sanded, primed and repainted the white legs and clear stained on top as I wanted the wood grain to show.. So before you upholster, think of selling yours and replace with something you like on ebay or gumtree. Goodluck
